I love Mother of Pearl buttons!
Stitch the button onto the fabric 4 or 5 times. The needle will come up through one hole of the button and back down through the other.
Tie thread onto the fabric on the wrong side of garment. Bring threaded needle up from the wrong side through one of the holes of the button. Then take the needle down through the other hole.
Next, bring the needle to the right side of the garment, right under the button but not through the hole.
Wrap the thread clockwise around the button 3 or 4 times. Wrap firmly but not tight. You are creating a "thread shank". This will make it easier to button and unbutton your garment.
Now take the needle to the wrong side to tie off the thread.
To tie off, slip the needle through the stitches on the wrong side of garment. You are not stitching through the fabric, only the threads.
After you take a stitch, slip the needle through the loop that is formed as you pull the thread up snug. Do this a couple of times, then cut the thread.
Oh boy! I need this lesson. I am working on my gown. I am actually just using some scrap fabric first to make sure that I can do it before I use the nice fabric. I have already made a couple of boo boos. I am slow but I am doing it.
ReplyDeleteWell I do my buttons similar, only I put the knot under the button the top of the fabric. That way on the back of the fabric all that shows is the little blip of thread. Well, when I think about it. Otherwise it is just like you. :)
