The Quilt I made for Amber

After about two years, the quilt I have been making with my friend Bunny is finished.

We had alot of fun together when we stitched it.  It turned out to be beautiful and I can't believe I did this  myself.    It was machine quilted by Charlene of The Happy Quilter who did a marvelous job on it.

My label has been stitched onto the quilt back.

This label that went on more than one airplane as I stitched it while traveling for teaching and for fun.
I love making labels!

I love this label!

The scripture I chose for the back of her quilt.

My Granddaughters Quilt.

Tucked Baby Gown

Pintucks seem like the hallmark of Baby Clothes.

I like the look of the totally tucked Yoke.  Tucks that go from one armhole to the other.

Notice that the tucks are not stitched too low on the yoke.  The general rule of thumb is not to stitch tucks below the underarm.

I like the Featherstitching on the Yoke (of course I do!)
And the  French Knots that are used to fill in the space between the tucks and Featherstitching.

I am also fond of the lace cuff on this dress, which is then trimmed with gathered lace edging.

But look at the inside of the garment.

Totally unfinished!!

I am always a bit surprised when a garment that is elaborately embellished on the outside is rough and ugly on the inside.  No one even attempted to finish it.

But it is very common on old clothes.

Look at the back of this gown.  Every bit as lovely as the front.

This Baby Gown would look so sweet on a new baby.  If you want to make it, I would suggest using my pattern "Old Fashioned Baby Layette".  Use the Daygown that button in the back and the long sleeves.  Toot Sweet!

Fancy False Round Yoke - Two

The back of the baby gown was stitched the same as the front.

They made a "block" of lace/swiss insertion.  Then they cut the front and the back yoke from the fancy "block" of lace/swiss insertion fabric  that was made.

This look was reproduced at the bottom of the skirt just above the ruffle.

Click on the  photo above so you can see the beautiful Hand Stitched Roll and Whip.
Now that is French Hand Sewing.

Susie was inspired by this dress and created one herself.

It's beautiful too.
 She won a Blue Ribbon.

You can see the old hem and the new hem. Pretty, pretty!

Fancy False Round Yoke.

Another beautiful dress from the collection of Susie Gay.

I love the combination of Lace and Swiss Insertion that was used to form the Yoke.
And I like the Swiss Edging that was stitched around the Yoke.

It is a Square Yoke Gown that gives the apperance of being a Round Yoke.

Click on the photo and you can see exactly what I mean.

This dress Yoke  is made just like my pattern Antique Toddler Dresses.

Lace/swiss insertion Round Yoke.

Ha Ha!  Not a Round Yoke at all.

It's a Square Yoke Dress that looks like a Round Yoke, just like the antique.

Vintage Baby Dress with Cute Hem

This sweet Baby Dress is from the collection of Susie Gay.

She showed me several of the garments she has - Lucky me!

I absolutely love a blue and white combination in just about anything (I have Spode Blue and White Dishes) and this dress really caught my fancy with the blue collar, cuffs and embroidery.

Click on the above picture and you can see that the embroidery includes little rounds of Shadow Embroidery.  Very nice.

The hem is special.  It adds a bit of elegant simplicity.
Understated but nice.

This is the right side of the Baby Dress.
You can see from the picture above that this hem was put in with the hand Running Stitch.

And the back of the hem was carefully turned under and probably basted in place before it was stitched.

I wish I had a picture of the baby who wore this little gem from the past!

From the collection of Susie Gay.

Pretty MOP Blue Shank Buttons

These are old Mother of Pearl Buttons.

They came from an old wharehouse and have never been used.

These Shank Buttons were dyed blue and measure 3/8" wide.

The color varies slightly from button to button due to age (the underside tends to be darker than the top too, which is what you see in the picture above but that doesn't matter).

They are a gorgeous blue and the perfect size for little boy day gowns, diaper shirts and anything you can imagine to with them!!

I love old Buttons

Walking around Susies Town

I am continuing posts about my visit with fellow Saga Teacher, Susie Gay.

Susie and I walked into her town to visit the shops, and have lunch.

I loved the shop that had this Baby Quilt.

I love things made for a  Baby.

I love that it is hand stitched. Long ago.
For a Special Baby.

All along our walk, there were gardens filled with Roses!!

ahhh…the beauty of them!

There are Front Gardens with cute fences in this town.

(with roses climbing up them and draping over them)

My favorite!!

The Roses are Ballerina Roses.  Perfect!!!
This is the outside of a shop.

It is the shop with the two Baby Quilts I like.

This one is also Hand Stitched.
(Slow Sewing….folks!)

Susies town, Smithfield,  is absolutely charming!!

What a wonderful visit I had with Susie.

A Peek Into Susies Sewing Room

While staying with fellow Saga Teacher Susie Gay recently, I got to see her Sewing Room.

A peek into Susies Sewing Room.

This is where Susie does her creative work for Berryhill Heirlooms.

I love this table in her sewing room that sits right under a window.

It's old with character.

Susie with her project from the class we took.

It is so much fun to see other stitchers Sewing Rooms.

Susie took me sightseeing during my visit.

We spent a day driving to the original Jamestown settlement site where we were able to walk around our American history, and along the Colonial Parkway and just general sightseeing.  I loved it.

The James River is very pretty.
Virginia is very pretty.

I had a great time!

And the Smocking Guild of American National Convention will be right in this area in the Fall!!

It's a lovely place to visit.
