They are all Mother of Pearl.

They  have been dyed pretty colors.

They are "Ball" buttons.  That means they are not flat like a regular Shank but are rounded from the bottom.

In the picture you see 1/2" wide Silk Satin ribbon threaded through it.

It is perfect for sliding  a ribbon through.
You might use it on a Bonnet or Slip or a Belt on a Romper  or little girls Dress.

Each Buckle is 3/4" wide.

Don't you love them??

Pretty MOP Blue Shank Buttons

These are old Mother of Pearl Buttons.

They came from an old wharehouse and have never been used.

These Shank Buttons were dyed blue and measure 3/8" wide.

The color varies slightly from button to button due to age (the underside tends to be darker than the top too, which is what you see in the picture above but that doesn't matter).

They are a gorgeous blue and the perfect size for little boy day gowns, diaper shirts and anything you can imagine to with them!!

I love old Buttons

Neat Four Hole Buttons - White

As I was sorting through a bin, I found these neat buttons.

They are Round Buttons that measure  1/2" to 5/8".  Which is to say they are smack dab in-between the two measurements and could be called either.

They are Round but have an inner indention that is Square which gives the impression of being  a Square  Button without the inconvenience!!  I like the 4-hole in this size button because they will look especially good on boys. Or little girl jumpers!

Sold by the One Dozen

or

Save when you choose Two Dozen.

Mother of Pearl….of course!

Freshwater Pearl Buttons - White

I just added these  3/8"  Shank Buttons to my Web Shop

They are Freshwater Pearl Buttons.   Many of the Freshwater Pearl Buttons come from the upper Mississippi River.  It is an industry that doesn't exist anymore but in it's hey day, was thriving.

Info about Pearl Industry  Here.

My Mother of Pearl Buttons are from old factories and have never been used.

What we love about the Freshwater Pearls is... they are White.

I love, love, love the creamy color of the Ocean Pearl Buttons.

But for some garments, I just want White!

How To Sew On a Button!

I love Mother of Pearl buttons!

Stitch the button onto the fabric 4 or 5 times.  The needle will come up through one hole of the button and back down through the other.
Tie thread onto the fabric on the wrong side of garment.  Bring threaded needle up from the wrong side through one of the holes of the button.  Then take the needle down through the other hole.

Next, bring the needle to the right side of the garment, right under the button but not through the hole.

Wrap the thread clockwise around the button 3 or 4 times. Wrap firmly but not tight.  You are creating a "thread shank".  This will make it easier to button and unbutton your garment.

Now take the needle to the wrong side to tie off the thread.

To tie off, slip the needle through the stitches on the wrong side of garment.  You are not stitching through the fabric, only the threads.

After you take a stitch, slip the needle through the loop that is formed as you pull the thread up snug.  Do this a couple of times, then cut the thread.
