Featherweight Friends

My Friend and her Featherweight Sewing Machine came to visit again.

I love our sewing time together.

We are still sewing our "Lizzie's Legacy" quilt.
Hers is blue, mine is pink.

All these blocks represent many joyful hours spent sewing with my Friend!

The day passed too quickly.
After she left I prepared and stitched another block.  I love sewing these blocks.

Each one is different but similar!!

Sewing With Friends

In my messy but fun sewing room.
I invited two friends over to sew with me.

We worked on a Baby Dress that I will be teaching at Farmhouse Fabrics in March.

My Brown Dog loved having extra people to pet him.
(he thinks they came to visit him)

And of course there was tea!

Living up to my New Years Resolutions!!

Fun With Friends- Afton Villa Gardens!

Everytime I visit, I am always moved by this little statue in the family cemetery.
Grief was a constant companion of those living  in the 1800's.

This is the entrance to Afton Villa Gardens. My favorite place in Louisiana!
In another week or so, the Azalea's will be in full bloom along either side of the road.

See  more about the Afton Villa Gardens.

For those who know me.  You will be surprised to learn that the Rose is not my favorite flower (but I do love Roses).

 It is the Daffodil!!

My shirt is really Navy Blue but it turned into LSU purple in this picture - so funny!
Picture Title:  Friends among the Daffodils. (Beth, Marsha, me)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed...and gazed...but little thought
what wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
and dances with the daffodils.
by William Wordsworth

For awhile - I was in Heaven!

Fun With Friends- Day 2!

The  dresses look just like the lovely dresses the  ladies on Masterpiece Theater wear!
The man's coat was from the 1700's.

We went to another Plantation home.

This Home has been in the same family since the Spanish Land Grant gave the land to the ancestors.  And the family lives there still.  Some of the rooms we saw featured antiques from 200 years ago mixed with a modern families needs.  The Parlor was really like a museum. Fixed just as it would have been during the 1800's. And it was the best part of the tour.

This is from the hem of one of the dresses.  Exquisite hand embroidery on such fine fabric.

This embroidered Initial was on a Pillow Sham on one of the 200 year old beds still in use. If you click on it you can see a close up. The workmanship is amazing. It obviously has  not been cleaned in quite awhile, which bothers me because it is such a treasure and should be better cared for.

This is the view from the front porch.  You can see the road which is the entrance to the house.
This is the same view that the Grandmother and Great Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother etc. etc. saw from the same front porch.  To me the view is totally tranquil.

I have decided that I don't like touring "lived in" homes as much as ones that are preserved just for tours. It is hard to get the feel for the period when you have 200 year old documents in frames that are so modern.  Plus, you don't get to see the entire house since the people live in it.  And I feel like an intruder.

The hostess was wonderful and gave great history lessons about the house but .... well, not my cup of tea.

I do envy her the gardens though.  Old brick pathways leading to secret places.
I wonder if she has the time to walk these paths.

This Birdbath at the end of the trail.

And the birds chirped so prettily and a beautiful Woodpecker flew from one huge Oak Tree to the next.  What a feast the birds have in their wonderful home!

And I felt like I was given the day as a gift!

Sew Sew's Part 2

This is the rest of the post about my Fun with my sewing friends!
I love the little picots.
Diane was working on a new Crochet Edged Baby Blanket.
(which reminds me that I need to do that tutorial I promised you!)

She was referring to Handmades booklet "Samantha's Crochet Edgings" to get the look she wanted.

Someone was embroidering a Pillowcase which was a class project from a visit from teacher Laura Jenkins Thompson.

These wonderful hyacinths perfumed the room.  I love these flowers!
I used the flowers my daughter gave me on the center of my table.

Lunch included a salad with chicken my son grilled for me.
I made Vegetable Soup too but alas no pictures.

I love things that you can eat alot of without the guilt!

Do you know what this is?

It is an Ice Cream Fork.

I love my old silverware  because it was made during a time when no one had anything better to do but think up odd pieces of cutlery for every imaginable use.

I usually base my dessert on my silverware!
I thought up something that required an Ice Cream Fork.
Most of you will think I'm nuts but it's FUN!

We ate our dessert too quickly for me to photograph it but it included Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream.  For those of you who have never tasted it,  you are deprived!

So I will describe the Dessert.  Try to imagine this.

Into my pretty bowl I put:

A warm Chocolate Chunk Brownie
A good helping of Ice Cream
Plenty of homemade Chocolate Sauce lavished over it all
and sprinkled with sliced Almonds.

Believe me, it was good!

Bunny is hiding behind the dessert bowl.

Yes, caught on camera!!  Licking the bowl.

We had to wrest it away from her.  For her own good!!

How can we live without our fun loving friends??

A Pretty Surprise and Eyelets

I had breakfast this morning on a pretty eyelet placemat graced with Fairy Roses in a pretty new Vase .

I returned from teaching in Norfolk to a surprise  waiting for me.

It was the beautiful vase.
A kind blog friend has sent me a pretty Tooth Pick holder to use with my Tea Parties.  I thought it was perfect as a Flower holder too.

I know she won't mind if I  use it as a lovely vase for my little Fairy Roses!
Thank you Pat!  I love it!!

It is such fine Linen.  And fine workmanship.
This is a close up of the Eyelet Placemat in the first picture.
click on pictures for a closer look
Notice  I have turned up the Linen to show  the wrong side on the right of this photo.
I want to show you how the thread has been carried from the embroidered Dot to Dot.  You can apply this to other embroidery stitches too.  After stitching each Dot, the thread has been carried down to the closest point of the scalloped edge and a stitch taken through the thread only of the scallop.  This was done because  there was too great a distance between the dots to carry the thread.  They could have tied it off of course, but no reason to (unless you are being judged in a competition!).

Friends

We are making Daygowns using "Baby Layette" pattern.
I went to visit a friend and we had FUN!
We are each sewing a daygown, hers is pink and mine is white.  We have been planing this for part of our summer fun!!
She sews faster than me!  I'm pretty slow.
Roses came from my Garden.
She loves Tea too!!  So we had tea and I got to choose my Tea Cup.
This is her sewing space.  She shares it with the home office they have.
Notice the shelf.  The hooks under it hold nifty stuff.
It's wonderful to sew here!
She has everything she needs right at her finger tips.  And pretty things to look at.
I should have taken more pictures.  I know you would like to see them.  See the black fabric under her sewing machine.  There are pockets that hold scissors etc.  I LOVE it!!!  And her drawer to the left has all her machine feet right there organized in the box, easy to find.

I came home and I am determined to make my sewing area more useful!!
I am always hunting for something.  Wasting my sewing time!

Sewing Friends are the best!
