Teaching at Beth's Heirloom Sewing Shop

The class I taught for Beth's Heirloom Sewing Shop was a mixture of hand and machine stitching.
We machine Rolled and Whipped the entredeux to fabric.  Then machine stitched the Baby lace edging to the entredeux.

With the cuff folded up it looks like the Daygown sleeve!!

I am sorry that we are missing Jan in this picture as I didn't think to take the photo until class ended (she had to leave early).

Everyone gone, and I'm sorting through my stuff to pack it all up.

Kinda sad to leave.
We had a good time and learned a lot!

But I'll be back next year….hope to see you.

Under-tuck Baby Daygown Class

I have been teaching at Beth's Heirloom Sewing Shop in Wetumpka, Alabama

We hand stitched the tucks and learned about Under -tucks. The short version of Under-tucks is that they add additional fullness to a garment.  Cool and very Old Fashioned!

The ladies also mitered and stitched lace to our Daygown.
And learned to hand stitch the tucks for a soft finish.  And we learned that it isn't hard to do it!

After the first day of class, Beth gave me a tour of Wetumpka.  Then we stopped at the River Park and took a long and lovely walk along the river path.

Wetumpka is a pretty little town!

More to come…..

Baby's First Daygown - Tucks in White

Because the basic pattern pieces are flat, it is possible to create your own tucked look.

Here is Baby with  Tucks and Embroidery but no Lace Insertion on the front.

There is one set of Tucks on either side of the front facing.
Featherstitching is worked on either side of the Tucks.

Notice how the tucks seem like a small feature on the daygown above.

But when put on a baby they show very nicely.

The sleeves are actually 3/4 length on this baby who is less than 6 weeks old.

Baby's First Daygown - View 3 in White

This Daygown was made like the green Daygown in the last post but I used different materials which dressed it up a bit.

I have used the new lace edging that I think is similar to the old lace used on my green gown.

This Daygown appeared in Sew Beautiful magazine (June 2012) and featured an article about how to Pinstitch the back  inverted pleat by hand.

I used a fancy entredeux on the neck edge which I think gives it a dressier look.

The inside of the pleat.
The embroidery on this gown was intended to be all white.  But you can see that pink floss was used to stitch the Bullion Rosebud at the bottom of the pleat.

Oops!

I machine Pinstitched the lace insertion that was placed between the Tuck Sets.

White is always appropriate for a new baby.

This Daygown pattern has two sizes included.
Newborn which fits 7 - 13 lbs (a "Take Me Home" size)
and Infant which is my standard Daygown size and fits to 18 lbs.

Materials are the same as the Green Daygown in previous post.

Baby's First Daygowns - View 3

This is the view with tucks.  You can use lace or embroidery between the two sets of tucks on either side of the center front.

This Daygown has off white  lace insertion between the Tuck Sets.

The tucks are stitched by machine.
The fabric is a very soft green.  I love the pink embroidery against the pale green.
This fabric is an old Geiger Batiste.  I have a Fairy Fabric that is almost the same color.

The lace edging is stitched along both sides of the front facing.  Ungathered.
Although the lace here is a narrow antique baby lace.  I have found some new lace that is very similar.
We often forget to use a narrow, dainty lace on baby clothes.

But a lace that is too wide will overwhelm the Daygown.

The off white entredeux was attached using the old fashioned method, which I love.

The sleeves on this view are 3/4 length. Although you can use the long sleeve on this gown.  This sleeve is very quick and easy to make and has more of a tailored look.  The embroidered Rosebud is a sweet touch.

A picture of the full daygown.

The back of the Daygown has an inverted pleat that ends with an embroidered Rosebud.  I have pinstitched the pleat on this gown.  The instructions for doing this are in Sew Beautiful magazine - June 2012.

This is one of my favorite Daygowns.
Partly because I love tucks and I love the green fabric with pink embroidery.

Materials:
1 yard fabric
2 3/8 yards narrow lace edging
3/8  yard of entredeux
5 Baby Buttons
1/3 yard narrow (3/8" )lace insertion for between Tuck Sets

Baby's First Daygown - View 2 Variation in White

This Daygown is a Class Sample.  I have taught this Daygown in classes for Saga guilds and for Shops.  The fabric used here is my  Daygown Lawn.

The lovely lace is Lilly of the Valley.
Instead of using Lace Insertion to frame the yoke, I used Lace Edging.
 Dressy with-out being too girly.

There are some good teaching techniques here.

Mitering the Lace Edging at the corner of the yoke lace. And look closely at the sleeve in the left bottom corner.  I attached entredeux to the sleeve and then added the lace edging to it.  I also threaded floss through the holes of the entredeux for a bit of color.

Blue and White is one of my favorite color combos, especially in Dishes (think Spode)!!
In class we learned the regular Featherstithing and the Antique Double Featherstitching along with Bullion Rosebuds.  The pinstitching here is by machine.  I can't remember if I taught hand Pinstitching in class or not.

I eliminated the lace at the hem for a simpler version.

This is really the same picture as above but I can show you my Peggy Martin Roses!
This picture was taken last spring.  Ahhh!

Very pretty and easy Daygown for your special baby!!

Have more fun sewing in 2014!!

Baby's First Daygowns - View 2 Variation

I'm continuing my posts about Baby's First Daygown variations. I hope you enjoy them.

Very pretty in blue.
Dress up for a Baby Boy.

For this version of View 2, I simply eliminated the Lace Edging at the Yoke.  It gives it a simpler, more tailored look.

I did add the lace edging to the hem.  I wanted that extra touch although you could eliminate the hem lace too.

Here is the same gown with the gathered lace at the  yoke.  I think it totally changed the look of the gown.

Notice, I used entredeux at the sleeve edge.

Blue and off white embroidery.

So many ways to make Daygowns!!

I love it.

Baby's First Daygown - View 2

View 2  is my Fancy Daygown in this pattern.  It has a lovely lace yoke that features lace insertion bordered with lace edging.  And sweet embroidery is nestled inside the lace yoke.

This sweet Baby (about 5 weeks old)  is wearing the Newborn size with 3/4 length sleeves

Pretty, but not so much that it overwhelms baby.

My embroidery is Featherstiching and Bullions  but you can use the stitches you like best.

Front and back view.

I love the little Rosebud at the sleeve.

Materials:
1 yard fabric
1/2 yard lace insertion (3/8" wide)
 3 3/8 yards lace edging (3/8" or 1/2" wide)
3/8 yard entredeux
5 Baby Buttons

Sew Beautiful Magazine - My White Daygown

This is my White Daygown that was featured in the Sew Beautiful Magazine - Baby Issue.

I made a kit for this Daygown using all the same materials that I used on mine.

It has a very sweet Lace Edging embellishing it.
One of my favorites.
And I love this fancy entredeux around the neck.

I trimmed the fabric from behind the lace and worked a machine Pin Stitch around the lace.

But the feature of this Daygown is the pleat in the back.
I finished it using a hand Pin Stitch.
That is what the Sew Beautiful article is about.
Instructions are in the magazine about how to do this.

This is what the Pin Stitched inverted pleat looks like on the inside of the Daygown.

Next post I will show you the green Daygown that is similar but I didn't cut the fabric from behind the lace.    I used the same technique on the back pleat.
I love Daygowns!

This is my White Wednesday!
