Cute Sewing Bags

The cute little Sewing Bags were made by my Mother In Law as a treat for my students at Farmhouse Fabrics. Very, very nice of her.

They are perfect for taking with you traveling. You put the part of the project in the bag that you are currently stitching…..a collar, sleeve etc. And the little clasp you see hanging on the side of this bag attaches to scissors and goes inside the bag. I put my airplane scissors on the clasp, that way when I am on the plane (in my tiny little space), they won't drop.

I use mine all the time.

I love it!

A Nice Day.

My Friend Bunny was over today.

We had Cream Tea in my Sewing Room.

We started Block 3 in our "Block a Month" that we are doing together.

I finished it! Yeah…it makes me feel like I am ahead of something.

Nothing to do on this quilt until another surprise package arrives in the mail next month.

Fun! Old State Capital/Stitching Exhibit

It might seem odd.

But one of my favorite things about the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge was the marble floor in the Ladies Room. The entrance had WOMEN engraved in it as you entered.

No question I was going into the right toilet!

It is a beautiful building. The Baton Rouge Old State Capitol.

Stained glass ceiling and rich old wood.

My eye was pleased everywhere I looked.

I am looking down from the top of the spiral staircase.

Every room is artistically done. You would be hard pressed to find the artisans who could reproduce the workmanship in this building. It is fabulous.

Imagine working in it everyday as was once the case. Shoes clicking importantly on the marble floors. I can imagine it. Women in smart dresses and men in suits.

One thing I wish we as a people would do, is to appreciate the beauty of the old buildings we have and keep them. We tend to tear them down and replace them with something "new" or "efficient" but not nearly as lovely. We need beauty for our soul.

That is the message I received from this exhibit. That women could find and create beauty from whatever was available.

Women know this! We need beauty for our soul.

A Friend and I went to the free exhibit titled "Our Quilted Past" but it is really about how our Grandmothers used Feed sacks for clothing as well as Quilts.

Our Quilted Past

An exhibit of quilts made from feed and flour sacks between 1925 and 1955 and the story of recycling cotton bags into household items.

Have More Fun in 2014!

things to do!

Have more fun! Purposeful fun! Lookin for it fun!

I'm making my fun list!

Reflecting on four fun things last year…in no order

I went to Paris with my sister, Kathy.

(that fun included fabric and classes)

I went to NYC with my daughter and two Granddaughters.

(that fun included three plays and a Ballet - no fabric)

I went on a road trip with my husband to Iowa.

(that fun included LOTS of fabric, fabric shops, museums of fabric and antique garments)

A trip to Cleveland to visit my sister.

(fun to sit and stitch with her!)

Things I want to do more of this coming year are:

1. Have friends over for Tea and Stitching.

2. Stitch more in front of the fire.

3. Have more dinners with my kids.

4. Go to more musical events and movies

5. Stitch lovely baby gowns.

Oh, and for flexible goals? I did get my first ever quilt basted and ready to quilt by the new year. I love the way it looks and hope I don't mess it up with my abysmal quilting stitches. But I am sure to get better if I …Practice!!

Fun Before SAGA Convention!

My wonderful Sewing Bag was perfect for this trip.

I had to hand carry the Vintage Sewing Box that I was giving for a door prize and this cute bag did the job perfectly! Room for my Ipad too.

I have been to Atlanta many times but just from the airport to Hotels or Shops to teach....and then home. So, in the interest of Having More Fun, I went a day early and joined the tour Saga had arranged for the members.

Our Saga tour guide was perfect for the job.

It was fun to watch her counting each of us off on her fingers as we went from place to place. She was determined not to lose a one of us!!

First stop, the Margaret Mitchell House.

I've read Gone With the Wind several times. I was 15 the first time I read it and I found the ending too sad. I am a believer in second chances!

I read it again a couple of years later and I conviently changed the ending so that after the book ended....Rhett came back to Scarlett and they lived happily ever after, having learned to appreciate what they had together. It could have happened!

The third time I read it, having had a little more life experience, ....well, she deserved what she got!

I loved seeing this picture of the "flapper" Margaret!

It was interesting to read about her life and find out how much she used her own sad life experiences in her book Gone With The Wind.

She and her husband lived in an apt. in this house we visited.

Time to read the book again, re-writting it in my mind to suit myself!

I'm back into second chances.

And I must see the movie afterward.

Next stop on our tour is Swan House. Stay tuned....

Fun in South Louisiana

One of my favorite people came to visit us last week.

We took her down to Avery Island to see the Tabasco Factory.

I love to see how things are made!

Be sure to find out when they are filling the bottles with Tabasco Sauce or you will miss the action part of the tour. Like we did!

Inside, you could taste the different kinds of Tabasco Sauce, which I thought would be fun. I tried the new Chipotle flavor. It was really good....then the fire in my mouth began to spread. OH MY GOSH....someone help me! So the nice sales girl handed me a small sample cup of coke. Chipotle coke! Didn't help. ...uh...Worse!!

But the ice cream did the trick. Thank goodness.

Next, we took my Mother In Law on a driving tour through the Jungle Gardens.

There were alligators to be seen.

You can believe that we weren't about to feed them!

It was a beautiful drive and there were places to stop and look around but we were a little leery of the reptiles. I could imagine them waiting in the brush for unsuspecting tourists.

Avery Island was a fun place to visit.

This is South Louisiana.

We also went to the Red Stitch Farmers Market on Saturday morning.

My favorite was the fresh Basil. Love that smell.

Then Gran made us fresh pizza with the produce we purchased.

Unbelievably good!!

Fun and Friends!

This small child's dress is from the 1800's.

I have been having fun!!

I went to up St. Francisville with two of my friends visiting from Texas. And we went to the Audubon Historic Site which includes a Plantation Home.

There are two tea cups on the little table under the window. Perfect!

When we came to this room on the home tour, my two (non sewing) friends said "Oh, this is Jeannie's room". And yes this was the ladies sewing room. With light coming in from the south, it would have been bright enough to stitch even on this dark rainy day.

The windows on the south side over look the formal garden. Too early for the flowers to bloom. In this picture, you can't see the beautiful Camilla's which were in bloom.

This bedspread was hand woven in the 1800's.

You can tell that it was a cherished possession by the wonderful condition it was in. Will someone cherish my little baby dresses for well over 100 years?

I love the peace of this house.

Tea and Fun!

This is the cutest design. Very old fashioned. It was on a gift bag a friend gave me.

Inside the bag were some treasures.

She always knows what I like!

And she fixed me Tea and gave me the choice of Cake or Chocolate Chip Cookies. You see what I chose. They were warm from the oven and yummy. And the Earl Grey tea was the best I've had in ages. Perhaps it was the company!

Of course I love having my cake (or cookies) and eating it too!

And I did! She let me take home the leftover cookies.

Then we went to the movie that I have been wanting to see. My sister saw it and she told me "Jeannie, stop whatever you are doing and go see that movie. You will love it!"

And I did.
