Emma's Smocked Baby Dress in Blue Dotted Swiss

Emma's Smocked Baby Dresses    as seen in Sew Beautiful Magazine.

I've shown you these pictures before.

But I am so excited that Emma is available again that I decided to post some pictures this week.

This is the Classic Emma.

I did some cute things to it for the magazine article.

And made this dress in exquisite Blue Dotted Swiss!
(the real thing!)

I attached a lace edging along the skirt.

I stitched it with a small running stitch right over where the hem was stitched to the skirt.  Using a Madeira #80 thread, you can't even see the stitches.  Always use the same color thread as the lace.

Smocked and accented in my favorite color combo - pink and blue

And to answer the question about pleating Dotted Swiss.
I pleated it just like I would have pleated anything else.  I didn't have any trouble at all.  I just pleated slowly in case I pleated through a dot.  NO TROUBLE!

I would never have considered removing the dots.  Way too much trouble.

I did a sweet collar treatment.  I found this on a baby dress shared with me by a student.  I named the dress in the Sew Beautiful article "Larsen Kate" after her Granddaughter.

I added a little cuff to the dress too.

Toot Sweet!

"Baby Emma" in Yellow Print - Ironing a Sleeve

This would be the Classic Baby Emma.  Made from a cute cotton print.

Smocked with 3 strands of yellow floss.

With self piping along the yoke and collars.

But on to the sleeve ironing.
The old fashioned way.

You lay the sleeve down on the ironing board, hand creasing it around  the middle.
And press it.

Ta da!  It is cute and the sleeve stands right up.

If you look at old photographs of little girls in dresses, you can see the same kind of creases on the sleeves.

A Rose of a dress!

And that's that!

"Emma's Smocked Baby Dress" - Available Again!

The OFB Emma's Smocked Baby Dress pattern is available again.

This is the Fancy version in the pattern.

Pretty smocking.  Fine embroidery.  And Entredeux and Lace Edging to finish the neck.

I used Anchor Embroidery Floss.
One strand for embroidery.

Two or Three strands for the Smocking.

Embellished Sleeves.

A Lacy Hem.

With embroidered Bullion Roses.

I love this easy little tucked dress back.

This fabric is Swiss Fairy Fabric.
Fine and sheer, but when starched, it's easy to use.

Here is the very same  fancy dress in Blue Fairy Fabric.

I am happy to tell you this pattern is available to purchase again.

I will be featuring more of the Emma pattern this week.

It is one of my very favorite.

Baby Lila Wearing Pretty Smocked Dress

Lila is Cute as a Button in Emma's Smocked Baby Dress!
Remember the photo of Lorraine working on this dress at our get together?

Her Grandaughter looks lovely in it!

Don't you want to just squeeze her sweet little arm?
Lila is 5 1/2  months old in this picture.  She weighs about 18 lbs.
This is a picture of a dress I made.  The pattern calls for the extra Lacy Band you see on mine but it is just as cute with one Lacy Band.
It looks good with one lacy band or two!
See!!  Baby is well and smiling in little garments made by Grandmama!!
