Handsewn Baby Dress

My new Granddaughter is 6 Months old and sitting up very nicely.

She is wearing the white Baby Dress that I made.  Every stitch by hand, buttonholes included.  It was such a pleasure to stitch and I love, love, love it on her.

It's made from a soft Swiss Batiste.

The dresses really are softer when stitched by hand.  That is because each seam has only one row of stitches, not the double stitching of a sewing machine (meaning the bobbin and the top stitch).

This is one of my favorite things she wears. 

I want to get all the wear I can out of it.  It's too long for her to crawl in but good for playing.  

I used my pattern  Old Fashioned Baby Layette.  The button in the back version.  I taught a class using this  design. When I get a chance I will put a kit together with the modifications and instructions.

Of course it can be made by machine, with hand embellishments.

She just melts my heart!!!

Rainy Day Sewing

I love to be inside sewing on a rainy day.

Nothing can make me happier.

My  sewing room is all clean and neat!  

I'm ready to begin a new project.  

I have a deadline which is a great help to get me moving.

I've been drawing out ideas.

I am going to have a new Baby- Grandchild.  My youngest Grand is over 12 years old.  Almost a teenager so I am really excited to get ready for my new Granddaughter in November.

I want to make something really special for the Baby Shower next month.

I have narrowed it down to two patterns.

The two patterns are Old Fashioned Baby Layette which is a great pattern for designing a new Baby Gown.  The other is French Acadian Christening Gown, stitched in  a shorter version.

It will be Baby Gown length.

Around 21".  Maybe 22" including the lace at the hem.

This is going to be so FUN!!

I Want to Copy This Vintage Daygown

My taste in baby clothes mostly run  simple.

I love this Daygown!

There isn't much to it, really. A few gathers, a little lace.

It has a small collar and the only color on the Daygown is tiny rosebuds on the collar and sleeves.  They are pink with green leaves.  I think my Old Fashioned Baby Layette will be the perfect pattern for it.

It is on my "I want to make it" list.

Miss Dot used my Old Fashioned Baby Layette pattern to create a lace V yoke on this Daygown.

I like the ecru lace on the white Windowpane Dimity Fabric.

Miss Dot Makes a Pretty Pink Baby Layette Daygown

Miss Dot used Old Fashioned Baby Layette to make this stunning gown.

She used the  Daygown version that buttons in the back.  She stitched tucks on the front bodice and then arranged lace over the tucks and attached them with a machine Pinstitch.

And added lovely embroidery!

And a lacy hem.

But then, she fancied up the back of the daygown too!  With lace insertion along the back facing.

And notice the sleeves have lace too.

Sigh!  It's a beauty.

Miss Dot Makes Another Baby Layette Daygown

Miss Dot used Old Fashioned Baby Layette to make this pretty Daygown.

She stitched three tucks from the shoulders to the hem on either side of the Front Placket.

And she attached a tiny lace edging to the outside of each tuck.

Very Pretty, indeed!

Old Fashioned Baby Layette is a very versatile pattern.  You can button it down the front or the back.  You can leave the front plain or include tucks.  It's a great pattern if you like to change up designs to suit yourself!

Miss Dot fancied up the hem too!

Baby Layette Daygown - per Suzette

Baby  Layette Daygown

Suzette made this Daygown using a design I did for my Old Fashioned Baby column I wrote for Creative Needle Magazine (March/April 1998).

It is just sweetness in a baby gown!!

The yoke featured tucks with lace insertion positioned between them.  On either side of the lace is Featherstitching and the embroidery is Pinwheel Posies.  Pinwheel Posies are an easy alternative to Bullion Roses and also can be considered a more tailored flower.

Suzette's work is lovely.

The sleeve is my favorite part of the gown. 

 It is a pretty little touch that I had seen in an old daygown.

I had given my Daygown away and forgot how very pretty it is.

I need to make another one, I think!

Stitching a Pink Daygown

 A Friend is making a pink Daygown as a gift.

She is using an old Creative Needle magazine as her design inspiration.

It was an article I wrote many years ago.

Back in the days when I wrote a column for them.

The Old Fashioned Baby was the name of the column, of course.

She has her tucks all done.  And the floss chosen, finally.

Isn't it amazing how many different shades there are of pink?

And how hard it can be to match them up?

She is tucking the sleeves too!

I'm sure she will finish up pretty soon.  

She's good like that.

Baby Blessing Gown

First Blessing Gown Jean has made!!

Jean was kind enough to send me this picture of the first Blessing Gown she has made.  It is made from Linen using Baby Layette pattern and she made it for her niece.  

Baby's mom wanted a simple but pretty  gown for the Blessing. 

Sometimes a  Church will  have a dedication ceremony or a Blessing ceremony and the Mom will want a gown that is pretty but not too elaborate.  The Baby Layette Daygown that Jean used will be plenty long enough to cover the tiny feet.

She also used the slip from Baby Layette but took the embroidery design from Best Embroidered Baby Clothes One.  She made a matching Bonnet too!

She did a lovely job!

Jesus said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them..."  And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.

White Wednesday - White Embroidery on Baby Gown

Design using OFB pattern "Old Fashioned Baby Layette".

This gown was published in Sew Beautiful Magazine issue #89.

The fabric is Swiss Batiste.  It features White on White embroidery.

The lace insertions down the front lends princess-style detailing to the gown.  Tiny Featherstitching runs along the side of the lace.

The fabric was cut from behind the lace, giving it an airy look.

The lace insertion at the hem appears to have tiny fagoting on either side but it is all one piece of lace.

The embroidery design includes eyelets, buttonhole eyelet flowers, stem/outline stitch, tiny bullion buds and applique cord.

Designing For A Needlework Magazine

Set from Old Fashioned Baby Layette pattern was featured in Sew Beautiful Magazine November/December 2008

Sew Beautiful has a BLOG!  This Layette set is pictured there.  They interviewed me and I am the Designer Feature!  Please visit their Blog and leave a message so they know you were there.  I think they  have lots of fun ideas they plan to post.

Love the Pink and Blue together!  It's so Old Fashioned Baby!!

I used the tuck design from the Yoke and the embroidery as my inspiration for the sleeve.  When I started the project for this article...I didn't know I was going to do that!

After I made the Gown I decided to make a matching slip.  Vintage Baby Gowns can have a matching slip that rivals the beauty of the Gown.

I should have made the slip first!  After making the Gown and Bonnet and starting the slip I was having more and better ideas!!  I like the hem of the slip better than the hem of the Gown!!
