Coming Home in a Special Gown

Every baby needs a special Gown when they come home from the Hospital!

I made this one specially for Londyn Marie.

This gown has many hand embellishments...  lovely embroidery and machine techniques to produce the Baby Gown I had envisioned!

I used my pattern "French Acadian Christening Gown" pattern and made it a shorter  Gown length.

French Acadian Baby Slip

Continuing my French Acadian Baby Gown post (Christening Gown pattern shortened to gown length).   I want to show you the slip.  

This slip is worn under the Gown that I gave as my Baby Shower gift.

The neck edge was finished by turning the fabric under 1/8" twice and stitched in place with a Running Stitch.

I embellished the neck edge with Over Tucks/Whip Tucks.  They were stitched 1/2" apart.  They take up such a tiny amount of fabric that I didn't need to allow extra fabric in the slip.

A sweet Old Fashioned Bullion Rose sits at the bottom of each tuck.

Little green leaves extend below them.

I finished the armholes with an old fashioned Shell Hem.

The hem of the slip has the same Maline Victorian Lace Edging as the Gown.

I gently gathered it to give it a bit of a ruffle.

I attached the lace using the sewing machine  Roll and Whip method.

I wanted soft ruffles in my lace and not tight gathers.

To achieve the soft gathers and to have additional control over the gathering, I pulled up three of the threads in the lace heading.  More info HERE.

Each lace is different as to the number of threads you can pull to gather.  You will need to experiment.  Most laces I would only gather two threads but this lace had a bit of wide heading and I had a much better result by pulling three.

The most important part of pulling the thread in the lace heading is to be gentle and slow.  The more threads you pull, the greater the resistance.  If you are not slow and easy, the fragile thread can break.

I learned this lesson the hard way!!

French Acadian Gown /Baby Shower

This is my finished Baby Gown for my new Granddaughter, due in November.

I used my French Acadian Christening Gown and shortened it to a Gown length (about 21 0r 22").

The shower was Sunday, October 1st and I stitched  for a solid month on the gown to complete it on time.

I am totally enthralled with this gown and I have more photos to show in the next post.

May this Baby Girl be showered with Grace.

Baby Shower - Six Days Away!!

Basic Gown shell is done.  It needs the Lace Hem, Sleeves (working on them), Neck finished.  

And embroidery.

I have been having the BEST time stitching this Baby Gown for my new Granddaughter due in November!!

I have been taking my sweet time enjoying every stitch.  Stop for tea.  Stop to read.  Stop for Friends. Stop for this.  Stop for that.

With the shower just six days away, I need to Stop my fiddle faddleing!!

Last night I attached the entredeux to the sleeve edge.

This morning I whipped the Maline Lace Baby Beading to the entredeux.

You can see I am stitching it by hand.  I usually do this by machine but two factors led me to hand  stitch  the straight lace beading.

1.  I dug through my special trims and found a bit of old (not vintage) entredeux which is amazingly lovely.  The holes are quite small,  making it more difficult to attach the lace perfectly by machine.

2.  The heading on the lace beading is narrow.  Now I had no problem attaching this same beading by machine to make the lace fancy band but decided because of the entredeux I would just whip it by hand.  

It was done in a jiffy.  

I couldn't have been much quicker by machine….honestly!

I can not wait to take this blue marking out and see how nice the hand stitched tucks and embroidery really are!!

There really isn't quite as much to do as it seams (I hope….I do tend to be unrealisticly optimistic)  and I will be ready by next Sunday Baby Shower.

My prayer for my Granddaughter….May the Lord keep this little one safe as she continues to grow and grow, waiting for her birth day.

French Acadian Gown for Baby Girl - post 3

Baby Slip

I am working on my gift for The Baby Shower for my new Granddaughter.  The Shower is Oct. 1 so I have a deadline.   See   Post 1,  Post 2

I began my sewing at night and didn't trust myself to start on the gown, so I stitched the slip.

I've finished most of the top.  Whip tucks and Shell Hem.

I have chosen all of my laces.  Lovely Malines.

The gown is hand hemstitched at the neck. Done!

Both sleeves have tiny hand stitched pin tucks and are marked for embroidery.

This is too much fun.

May this child be a blessing to all who know her

The Choice

I decided to make Baby Girls Gown using  my pattern "French Acadian Christening Gowns".

I want it to be in the style of….but it won't be exactly the same, partly because it will be shorter than a Christening Gown.

So, I am looking at several garments that are similar to what I want.

More decisions to make!!

And I haven't even taken one stitch yet! :(

Rainy Day Sewing

I love to be inside sewing on a rainy day.

Nothing can make me happier.

My  sewing room is all clean and neat!  

I'm ready to begin a new project.  

I have a deadline which is a great help to get me moving.

I've been drawing out ideas.

I am going to have a new Baby- Grandchild.  My youngest Grand is over 12 years old.  Almost a teenager so I am really excited to get ready for my new Granddaughter in November.

I want to make something really special for the Baby Shower next month.

I have narrowed it down to two patterns.

The two patterns are Old Fashioned Baby Layette which is a great pattern for designing a new Baby Gown.  The other is French Acadian Christening Gown, stitched in  a shorter version.

It will be Baby Gown length.

Around 21".  Maybe 22" including the lace at the hem.

This is going to be so FUN!!

Antique French Acadian Short Gown

 Thankyou, Mary for sharing your gown with me!

This wonderful little Gown was made in South Louisiana.

It is the French Acadian Style that was popular here beginning in  early 1900.

Every stitch by hand.

This dress has some different features from the one I made into a pattern.

To copy Mary's gown is on my "hope to do in 2015" list.

Beautiful Christening Baby!

I think this is a stunning photo.

The baby looks like an angel and the dress is perfection!

This cherub's Great Aunt Shirley made her Christening Gown.

And, of course, the slip that goes with it!

She used my pattern French Acadian Christening Gown.  She then made some changes so it would be just the way she wanted it to be. 

And it is beautiful, indeed!!

Prize Winning Christening Gown!

  French Acadian Christening Gown by Susie on display at the Woodlawn Neeldework Show.

Susie Gay entered her  Christening Gown in the Woodlawn Needlework Show.  She received a First Place, Second Place and a Judges Award!    Hooray for Susie!! She is supporting the Heirloom Sewing Arts!

We aren't surprised!  It is beautiful!  And the skill needed to complete it by hand is apparent in her work.

French Acadian Christening Gown Pattern

French Acadian Christening Gown.

Susie sent me pictures of this gown she made.  She took the French Hand Sewing  class I taught at a SAGA convention and this gown was the project.  Didn't she do a fabulous job?  It's a wonderful picture too, with the back lighting.

Susie's  Embroidery is so prettyl!  

Notice all the Featherstitching!! And most of it is the Antique Featherstitch.  Ooo Laa Laa!! I love it!!
