Three Finished Dresses!!

This lovely Gown is entirely handsewn! SAGA Class from 2009

Circa 1920 Baby Gown.  Pattern now available on my Web Site.

All at one time, I received pictures of three baby garments that Sharon had finished from classes she took from me

Embroidered Raglan Daygown. Very nice job!

Many of you will recognize this little daygown.  We made it with my Sew Along!

Sweet and Simple Daygown Collection.

But this Daygown takes the cake!  This was the class project from this years SAGA convention.  Sharon is the first one to finish I think.  First one I have heard of anyway!!

Go Sharon!!! 

Sharon will be the FIRST to receive her certificate for completing this two day class!!

For the other students who took this class....To get your certificate - I must have a picture sent to me by December 31, 2010!!

Silk Broadcloth

See, Babies are well and smiling in Old Fashioned Baby clothes!

Baby Annie is wearing  a Baby's Smocked Layette dress made from Silk Broadcloth.

I posted the same little dress made from Dotted Swiss a couple of days ago.

The Baby's Smocked Layette pattern was inspired by a Vintage Baby Gown.  And I worked hard to get that same vintage look in my design.  But it's pleater compatible!

Beautiful, huh?

The Silk Broadcloth fabric has a nice body but it drapes just like silk (well, it is silk).

The manufacturer says to dry clean but I hand wash it and hang  to dry or stick in the dryer on low heat to dry. 

 Funny thing, if you dry it in the dryer it is very flimsy.  If you line dry it, it is very stiff and has body.  Best is to line dry it until almost dry and then stitck in the dryer before you sew it.  Sews up very easily, unlike china silk!

I am curious how many of you have used silk when sewing  for baby's or children?

White Wednesday - Dotted Swiss

 Baby's Smocked Layette has a touch of smocking at the neck.

Pretty Dotted Swiss Fabric makes dainty Baby Clothes!

The Raglan Style of  Baby's Smocked Layette makes fit easy and comfortable. 

The sleeves are 3/4 length and smocked for a good fit.

If you look closely you might be able to see just a hint of pink beneath the dress.

I used a pink slip to give it a tinge of color.  I can change the slip to white for a pure white look.

Dotted Swiss fabric is an embellishment unto itself. You can't even notice the embroidered Rosebuds I stitched above the hem.

The hem is two lace insertions sewn together (and yes, I did match the laces), then stitched to a Scalloped Lace edging.  Simple, but it adds a dressed up look.  I love the look of the two lace insertions sewn together.

Hmm, for everyday wear!

Little bit of smocking at the neck and smocked sleeves.

This is the smocking design that was on the antique garment that inspired this pattern.

Notice the lower rows of cables.  You get a different (old fashioned look) by simply not lining up the cable rows.  The old garments never looked neat and precise (well, rarely) because they did not use a Smocking Pleater to pleat their fabric.  I like the old look!

White Wednesday- Raglan Christening Gowns

This Christening Gown is View 3 from the OFB pattern "Raglan Christening Gowns"

Christening Gowns are the most important garment ever worn.  Rarely will a Bride wear her Mother's Wedding Gown but the Christening Gown will be worn by many babies.  Your Baby, your Grandbaby, and your Great Grandbaby.

Close up of the Yoke.  The lace is Angel Lace.

I recommend that you purchase the best materials you are able to afford.

How much did you pay for the Wedding Gown that was used once?

This is View 2 and was inspired by an antique  Gown.  Tucks and Lace embellish the yoke.

Swiss Batiste is the fabric used most often for Christening Gowns.  The weight of the Swiss Batiste depends on the style of the Gown.  For the A-Line style here, I would use the Nelona or  Dress Weight Swiss Batiste.

The hem is finished with Lace and Featherstitching.

This is  the View 1 Gown.  It is a simpler version.  

The sleeves are pleated instead of gathered. It is a tailored style and made from Linen.   

This is the "Raglan Christening Gown" pattern.  The Raglan style helps it to fit Baby better.  There are no shoulders so it is more flexible in fitting.  For more fitting information see Fitting.

White Wednesday- Pretty Sew Beautiful Dress

I love this little dress!!

Crisp and White with just a touch of color.

Baby Dress is made from the OFB pattern

"Best Embroidered Baby Clothes 1".

This dress is one of three in an article I wrote for the latest issue of Sew Beautiful Magazine.

The embroidery at the yoke is Featherstitching and Bullion Rosebuds.

The sleeves are made from one wide piece of Swiss Edging.  

I used luscious trim from Bear Threads!

I used a Swiss Batiste for the dress so it would match the trims.

Embroidered Roses are done in  Anchor Floss.  Pink - 48 and Green 1042.

I stitched Bullion Roses in the openwork area of the  Swiss Edging.

I love the little touches of color against the white.

I used a Swiss Insertions down the middle of the Dress and French lace on either side of it.  Then the  hem is finished with a matching Swiss Edging.  The pink entredeux is threaded in and out of the entredeux edges of the Swiss trim.  Next post I will show you how to do this.

 And it buttons all the way down the back.

White Wednesday- Embroidered Baby DayDress

View 2 From OFB Baby Daydresses pattern.

I made this DayDress as a class sample for a guild I was teaching for.  

There are many good techniques to learn here and it was a fun two day class!

The dress is made from a nice white Linen.

  Many of the flowers are Bullions. 

 I stitched two bullions side by side to create a petal.

My Rose is Katy Road Pink from my Garden.

This dress has a fancy sleeve if you elect to make it.

I did not cut the fabric away from behind the lace.  The fabric is more stable this way and I like the way it looks.

Embellished with Lace and Bullion Roses.  Of course!

Full view of my dress.  I used a nice ivory lace.

Hem embroidery is not too daunting!  But it's pretty!

And more shaped lace to practice on.

The back has a placket.  With my signature Rose Bud!!

White Wednesday- Smocked Baby Dress

Baby Anna is wearing View 2 of "Baby's Smocked Layette".

It has just a touch of dainty smocking at the neck.

And an old fashioned scalloped hem.

The dress fabric is sheer white Fairy Fabric and the hem is pink appliqued to the wrong side.

I appliqued the hem to the dress using a machine Pinstitch on the Pfaff Creative 2144 Sewing Machine.

And I hand embroidered Featherstitching and a Bullion Rose above the hem.

Blue Sweet & Simple Romper

Cute little Boy Bubble is from  the pattern "Sweet & Simple Bubble's and Bonnets"

Classic Baby Boy!  Kit Available!

Sometimes, I like to sew the buttons on using a colored thread.

I trimmed the bubble with white baby tatting which I whipped on by hand. 

And for all those of you who have lamented to me that they can't work the Running Stitch as tiny or even as mine -- This close up will show you that mine really are never perfect.

White Wednesday - Ruffled Brim Smocked Bonnet

Ruffled Brim Smocked Bonnet.

This Smocked Baby Bonnet is from "Baby's Smocked Layette".

Click on the photo to enlarge and see the embroidered Bullion Rosebud on the Smocking.

Made from Swiss Batiste and French Lace.

The Brim is folded back, pleated and  hand smocked. Click on the picture and you can see that I attached the lace to the ruffle with machine Pin-stitching

Smocked Baby Clothes Daygown

Pattern is Smocked Baby Clothes.

I absolutely love it when people send me pictures of baby clothes they have made using my patterns.
