White Wednesday - White Baby Dress

This sweet Baby Dress is from the pattern Old Fashioned Baby Daydresses.
The embroidery design and the curved lace at the bodice and hem are slightly different in the pattern.  I made this dress for an article in Sew Beautiful magazine.

The article was about double Featherstitching.  What I call Old Fashioned or Antique Featherstitching.
You can find instructions for it in my Embroidery Book.

This is the dress we will be making this weekend as I teach for the Sew Heavenly sewing shop.

It is very elegant in an understated way.

The dress features lace insertion on the front.  The fabric is cut from behind the lace for a lovely effect.

And there are Bullions,  and hand stitched tucks and Featherstitching.
I love this dress!

I want Featherstitching to be everyone's Favorite stitch.

This is White Wednesday where I show you beautiful White garments!  Join me with Faded Charm.

I just LOVE this dress....as soon as I finish the project I am on now, I will be making this confection!!!!!!I will probably start it in the next two weeks!! Can't wait! I would LOVE it if you would do a "double feather" stitch tutorial soon (before I get to that part of making this dress)I have pulled the technique up on the internet and have studied the method in my embroidery book, but neither resource really explains it very well. I just LOVE the way yours always turn out - simply gorgious!!!
Thanks

I am so pleased you like my little dress. I am afraid that I couldn't do much better showing this double Featherstitch on my blog than I did in my embroidery book. There are so many stitches that require actually watching the motion of the hands and I think this is one of them for me. Thank you for being my blog friends!!

I LOVE this dress! I have one question: when you add the pinstitch on the insertion, do you press the seam allowance toward the insertion (or toward the fabric) before you add the pinstitch? I just got a new machine with the pinstitch on it, and it looks alot better than my hand pinstitch!

Mary, I press the seam allowance toward the fabric, if I am understanding you right.

I'd like to learn the double feather stitch. It is beautiful. Do you know what issue of Sew Beautiful it was in?

Thanks,

Laurie

Hi Jeannie, thanks for popping into my blog and leaving a comment. I hadn't seen your baby clothes before today and I was immediately transported back in time to my early 1950s childhood when tinies wore this style here in the UK. I confess your supreme craftsmanship brought a tear to my eye. The dotted Swiss fabric was my mum's favourite, I had no idea it was still being produced. Thank you for a lovely journey down memory lane. Eli

I found the article in issue 78 of Sew Beautiful, on page 47. I saw a lot of your other articles on the way to find this one. What fun!

Jeannie, I just found your blog a few weeks ago. I visit regularly. This is my first comment though. This little dress makes me ache! I find that happens with many of your beautiful creations. How I wish Utah were not so far from Louisiana!! And I'm so very thankful there are people like you who can create so beautifully and are so generous to share with those of us--like me--who do better with pictures and directions. Keep up the lovely work, please! It feeds my soul........Carol
