Isolation Fun- Vintage Baby Gown Post 2

The front of the vintage baby gown has been shirred just under the front neck binding.
Worked over the shirring is hand embroidery.  Please click on photo for closer look.

You can tell this is shirring and not smocking because the stitches do not pick up the fabric gathers in any order.  Smocking would pick up the pleat as the stitches were executed.

The design begins with a row of knots.
I can't tell if they are French Knots but they might well be as they resemble them. They go through the fabric to the back, with the thread trailing from knot  to knot.

Next is  triple Featherstitching. The Featherstitching is worked on the front surface of the shirring and the stitches do not go through to the back, although an occasional odd stitch can be seen on the back.
Then another row of knots

Next is a row of Slanted Outline/Stem stitch.  These stitches do go all the way through the fabric to the back which helps keep the gathers in order.  But they are worked as surface embroidery with no regard to the fabric gathers.

The design then repeated itself, ending with a row of Slanted Outline/Stem stitch.

The thread used does not appear to be embroidery floss. It has
a tighter twist. But it is thicker than regular sewing thread.

I really want to copy this design. It's on my someday list!

This is the wrong side of the gown.

There are gathers on either side of the back of the gown opening.  The gown opens with a baby placket and has three buttons with hand made button holes.
The Mother of Pearl (of course) Buttons are 1/4" and beautifully carved.

Notice the flat string that threads through the back neck facing.
You can pull it up to fit the baby's neck.

More information in the next post.

Would be a great new pattern! The entire gown, both with open and closed back, but particularly with instructions for the casing.
