White Wednesday -Pretty Bonnet and Daygown

I will be teaching for the National Convention of the Smocking Arts Guild of America in September.  The National Convention is an annual event that takes place in a different host city every year.  Wonderful women who love sewing get together for a great time! This year it will be held in Norfolk.

Both the Bonnet and the Daygown design were inspired by vintage garments.

One of the classes I will teach is the Sweet and Simple Embellished Daygown and Bonnet.  It is a two day class.  I love two day classes because it allows students to really learn  the techniques I am teaching. They will get alot done on their Daygown which is fun for them!  And I

love

this little Daygown and Bonnet so it will be especially fun for me.

White Wednesday- Sweet Tucked Daygown

Lovely Baby Daygown!

Baby is always beautiful in white.

I love tucks on a Daygown.

Touches of pink embroidery between the tucks and between the top two buttons is sweet.

And a Rosebud on the sleeve.

And don't forget the little Rosebud on the back of the Daygown. This is one of the Daygowns I made with my Friend!

My Summer of Daygowns!!

These are the finished Daygowns that my Friend and I made.

I am working on a new sleeve.

I love Daygowns!  We are going to make them all summer long!!

 I made the white Daygown with one sleeve draft and  Friend made the pink Daygown with a slightly different sleeve.
You can make cute  Daygowns using Baby Layette pattern.

 Friend used the Lace and Embroidery design from my book "Jeannie B's Book of  Heirloom Embroidery Designs and Stitches"

I am changing the sleeves a little so I can't wait to make another Daygown using the new sleeve.

We have already chosen our fabric for our next Daygowns!!  I will show you next!

Designing For A Needlework Magazine

Set from Old Fashioned Baby Layette pattern was featured in Sew Beautiful Magazine November/December 2008

Love the Pink and Blue together!  It's so Old Fashioned Baby!!

I used the tuck design from the Yoke and the embroidery as my inspiration for the sleeve.  When I started the project for this article...I didn't know I was going to do that!

After I made the Gown I decided to make a matching slip.  Vintage Baby Gowns can have a matching slip that rivals the beauty of the Gown.

I should have made the slip first!  After making the Gown and Bonnet and starting the slip I was having more and better ideas!!  I like the hem of the slip better than the hem of the Gown!!

Too Late! No time (or desire) to re-do the hem.  Next time.

White Wednesday -Sweet Daygown for SAGA Class

The pattern is OFB "Sweet & Simple Daygown Collection".  The design is a variation of the pattern that I created for my class..

This is such a sweet little daygown for a baby!

I am teaching a class for SAGA National Convention in October.  And this Daygown (plus a matching bonnet) will be my class project.

Beautiful Bullion Rosebuds and Featherstitching.  Even a Bullion Rosebud in the button!

My signature Rose on the back of the Daygown.  

My babies were always hiding their shy little faces against me when people talked to them.   All  people saw was their back...so give them something pretty to see!

White Wednesday - Embroidered Raglan Daygown

Baby Gown is from the OFB pattern Embroidered Raglan Daygowns.

There are so many shades of White.  And there are even variations of the shades of white.  I love to look at the white linen gown  against the lace tablecloth.  Textures and shades and shimmering sun tipped roses.

These beautiful things came from the local grocers, not my garden!

This is a nice long length to cover baby's little toes!

It has a cute little duck family  Shadow Embroidered at the hem.

Pretty pink ribbon to tie in a bow.

The sleeves are finished with a ribbon so it can be pulled up to fit baby's wrist.

Baby's Smocked Layette Daygown

Baby Doll is wearing "Baby's Smocked Layette" Daygown and the "French Acadian Baby Bonnet".

This little baby doll is the  size of a newborn.  The light blue gown is made from  sheer  Fairy Fabric.  It has a touch of smocking at the neck and smocked sleeves. The neck is finished with entredeux and lace.

Lovely gown with Smocked Sleeves and a Lace trimmed collar. Fabric is a pretty lawn.

Delicate colors are used for the Smocking. See the little pink Rosebuds!

The back of the gown is comfortable for baby.  Flat instead of gathers with a little inverted pleat for extra wiggle room.

Dream Stitches: Baby's Layette - (Five)

Sweet & Simple Daygowns pattern  For Girl (left) or Boy Baby(right). 

Sweet little Daygowns are the staple of Baby's Layette for the Old Fashioned Baby today.  Make them out of soft fabric like the  Lawn  shown above.  Front buttons make it easy to dress baby.  Use cotton and don't worry about wrinkles. The fabric is  soft and comfortable!!  And baby is happy!

A layette consisted not only of garments but also included bedding and toilet articles for a newborn child.  According to an article in the 1917 American Dressmaking Step by Step, the following itmes were considered a necessary part of a basic layette:

4 Dresses  (these dresses/gowns would have been at least 27" long)
3 Petticoats (flannel)
2 Sacks
3 Pair Booties
1 Diaper Cover
1 Coat
2 Shawls
6 Dayslips (Daygowns today)
3 Petticoats -white
3 Flannel Bands
3 Pairs Stockings
4 Dozen Diapers
2 bonnets
1 Carriage-robe
6 Nightslips
2 Kimonos
3 shirts
4 Pining Blankets
6 Bibs
1 Veil
1 Receiving Blanket

This was a basic layette which meant "the minimum" baby would need.  It might be much more elaborate if ones means allowed.

I used baby tatting for the boy Daygown  but tatting is nice for either.  And baby Lace for baby girl.

Sewing the layette garments for a new baby is still the thrill it was when the poem Dream Stitches was written.  And it feels like we have wrapped that baby up in our love when they are wearing something we made for them.    "Many a prayer and many a dream"

Sweet Baby in "Baby's Smocked Layette" Daygown

What a lovely baby!  She is wearing the Daygown version from "Baby's Smocked Layette" pattern made in a soft pink Swiss Flannel.  The long sleeves and the center front are smocked using  white floche and there is lace at the neck and sleeves.  She looks so soft, comfortable and snuggly!  Her Mom took this amazing picture!

I am using antique lace from my "collection" (stash).

I am  unable to work on only one project at a time!

  I will tell you that I admire people who finish one project before beginning another.  There was a lady who would come into my shop and buy fabric & lace for 3 daygowns.  She would go home and make them.  Then, she would come back for more fabric and lace.  Can you imagine?

The picture you see above will become a little hemstitched baby gown. You can see that I have already removed the threads to begin the hemstitching.  I am using Swiss Batiste and some of my old lace that I have collected or been given over the years.  I never use it because it is just too special.  What am I waiting for?  With another birthday looming, I figured now was a good time to begin using all my special laces!

Newborn Baby in Priscilla's Layette Daygown

Journey is less than 2 weeks old here.

This lovely Daygown is made from the Lacy View 3 of Pricilla's Layette pattern.  It is made from a pale pink batiste (Old Fashioned Baby Daygown batiste) with lace frills.  And made by her proud Grandmother.  Notice how the beading at the wrists can be pulled up with ribbon to fit her tiny, newborn wrists!  Very Pretty Baby and very pretty Daygown and Bonnet.  It was her "Going Home From the Hospital" outfit.
