Sleeping Baby in Sweet Daygown

Baby Mariko looks pretty content!

As all babies wearing sweet baby clothes made by loving friends and relatives are apt to be!

(especially if they use my Old Fashioned Baby patterns)

Sarah used  my Sweet and Simple pattern to make this Christmas Daygown.

I love the way little Mariko is floating through the stars, just like Wynken, Blynken and Nod!

The pattern I used for the Daygown featured in Sew Beautiful is my new, yet to be released Daygown.   

You can use any of my Daygowns, though.   The article was showing how to lengthen any Daygown and  add a ribbon  or elastic to close up the bottom and keep the little feet snugly!

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night

Sailed off in a wooden shoe-

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,

And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies

Is a wee one's trundle-bed;

As you rock in the misty sea

Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:-

This poem is a favorite of mine...many nights I read this to my own little babies.

Pretty Baby Bonnet and Bonnet Training!

This little Bonnet was made using my OFB pattern "Raglan Christening Gowns".

Find out about the pretty Bonnet Display in my first Bonnet post.

This is a classic Baby Bonnet such as was made for ages and ages.  Lace and Swiss Batiste.  The lace frill around the face is always flattering.

This bonnet has a lace embellished brim on it.  And embroidery.  My favorite stitch, Featherstitching!

I love a bonnet that has embellishment on the crown too.

I have used "Angel Lace" for most of the bonnet.  If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you can see the angels on the insertions (they are in the center of the insertion and alternate with one right side up and one upside down).

The ribbon ties on this bonnet have  been double folded and stitched in place by hand.  Sometimes you don't need a fancy Rosette.

Bonnet Training.

Did you know that you must Bonnet Train your little baby?  

If Baby is used to wearing bonnets every time they are out and about, they will think nothing of it.   But if you do not put bonnets on Baby as a regular part of their wardrobe, they will not want to keep it on their head at all!!

Pretty White Napkins!

I was given a very nice gift recently.

You can tell that the person who selected this gift knew me well!

Several Vintage Napkins and an assortment of Tea.

The Napkins are made from fine Linen.  

They were hand embroidered and edged with Lace Trim.  I think the Lace is handmade.

Can you tell that the embroidery is a pale blue?  My favorite combination - Blue and White!

Four different interesting Teas.

Some old friends dropped in....so, we had tea with our lunch.

The first choice to try was the Raspberry Earl (I knew I would love anything with "Earl" in it!).

And I did.  It was very good.

With flowers from my garden.  

These Fairy Roses are loving this cooler weather.

Fun Sister Vacation!

Ready to embroider Pillowcases!

My Sister came for a visit and we did fun things!  Like go antique shopping.

These pillowcases were sold in a package  together with other treasures.  The fabric they are made from is soft and closely  woven.  You can't find ready to embroider pillowcases of this quality today.  

I am wondering why this fabric feels nicer that today's fabric that is a higher thread count!?  Notice the machine Hemstitching.  These are really nice!

Do you see the lovely beach? Close to the Florida/Alabama state line.

Here they are displayed on the table, looking out over the Beach!!  

Yes, we had a beach vacation!!  And a good thing we went when we did because the past several days have been a tropical storm!!  Our weather was perfect!

 The pillowcases in the first photo were tucked inside the bag of goodies (all for $15) that included all of the above.  Three sets of pillowcases, each prettier than the first.  A pattern of embroidery designs to stamp on the pillowcases.  And an assortment of old embroidery hoops, which I collect.

Someone had begun to embroider this pillow case.  I have since ripped out the stitches so I can choose my own colors.

Two sets of the Pillowcases have Hemstitched hems.  Or Thread Drawn Hems, as the label calls them.

I love that the old labels were still on them!

The lady who owned them knew what she was about.  She had wrapped two of the hoops to give a more secure fit and protect the fabric.  My sister and I shared the bag of goodies but she let me have all the hoops!

See the two chairs down by the water?  Those chairs are for me and my Sister!~  It's early morning on the beach and the Beach Umbrella girl is setting up the chairs and umbrellas for the beach goers.

We had the fine fortune of going to the Gulf beach just before the storm came.  When the weather  was perfect, the water was clear and green and you could see all the fish swimming around your feet!  But NO Jelly Fish at all!!  And do you notice how no-one is on the beach?  School had started and it was a quiet, restful time!

Ahhh...

(wish I were still there)

Baby Rose Class at It's Sew Heavenly

Bermuda Faggoting is also known as  Point Turc, Three Sided Stitch or the Lace Stitch.  

I will be teaching for It's Sew Heavenly in November.  And everything for the class has been decided! 

The dress will be made from Baby Rose pattern.

This is Baby Rose.  This dress is similar to the one we will make in class.  But different slightly.

In addition to the Bermuda Faggoting, we will stitch Looped Bullion flowers, Bullion Rosebuds,  Featherstitching and a couple other stitches.

 

We will join the front to the sleeves with Entredeux (entredeux means between two).

The color of the dress is pale mint green using a fine Swiss Batiste.  Laces will be a soft ivory and the Anchor embroidery floss will be carefully chosen.

 

This is how sweet this style dress looks on a baby!

Our dress will be the prettiest one ever!

White Wednesday - Pretty Shadow Embroidery.

Little dress and embroidery were made by a  Friend.

I first printed this Embroidery design on a gown in Creative Needle...a long time ago.

You can now find it in Antique Toddler Dresses,  Best Embroidered Baby Clothes Two and a slightly smaller version in my Jeannie B. Embroidery Book

Shadow Embroidery is lovely and not difficult to stitch.  Old Fashioned Shadow Work embroidery, originally called cross backstitching, consists of stitches worked on the wrong side of sheer fabric.  The result will be the closed herringbone stitch on the wrong side and double rows of backstitching on the right side with the thread from the back shadowing through to the front.

It was often worked with white thread on white fabric which gave a very elegant look. Today it is mostly colored threads used on linens and fine children's clothing. Beautiful, anyway you stitch it!

First Communion Dress - White Wednesday

This First Communion dress was worn by my friend Carole (of the crochet edging fame - and I really am going to post how she does her scallops...later) many years ago.

It was also worn by her Daughter and Granddaughter.

And after each child wore it, it was lovingly put away, along with the little fingerless gloves.

It was made right here in Baton Rouge in a shop long gone.

Stitched by hand.

The fabric is a fine organdy.  It  is slightly softer than most of todays organdy.

The hem above is so lovely!

Tucks in the hem are edged with lace.

Close up of the hemstitched tucks.  Embroidery is stitched between the them.

The back of the dress is as beautiful as the front.

Notice the buttons.

The sleeve is puffed and embroidered.

It is a treasure!

White Wednesday - Antique Baby Gown

This little Baby Gown is a sweet, sweet treasure.

It was passed along to me so that I might share it with you and others. Please notice the yoke.  It is made from embroidered fabric and is very fine.  A dear lady named Mary gave it to me.  You can see the bonnets she gave me here.  

Although it is a yoked style, there are few gathers at the yoke.  It is cut in more of an A-line style with a yoked bodice.  Mrs Buford Dextor (born in 1902) wore this gown made by either her Mother or Grandmother.

The ruffle at the hem was rolled and whipped and attached to lace insertion. There was alot of rolling and whipping going on here!  It is entirely hand stitched.  The hem of the ruffle was put in with a Hemstitch.  Lace edging sewn to the very bottom.

This is some Embroidered Swiss Batiste fabric that is very fine and embroidered all over.  It is perfect to duplicate this gown.

Babies  may start out small,

but the important thing is that they grow!

Vintage Christening Gown

Bodice of Vintage Christening Gown.

A friend brought this beautiful Christening Gown  to my home for me to see.  She brought another one and you can see the post about it HERE.  It was even more amazing!

This was a Christening Set. There is  a matching slip and bonnet.

Everything is entirely hand stitched.

The lace at the hem of the gown.

The hem was edged with lace insertion.  Matching Lace Edging was sewn to either side of it.

You can see that the same technique was used on the lace embellishing the front of the gown.

It was made by Best and Co.  I have seen the adds from this company in vintage magazines!

Matching Bonnet.

The fabric on the gown and bonnet are a soft organdy.

Lovely embroidery is flowing down the front of the gown. It looks similar to a design I have used, inspired by an old baby garment. You will find that parts of the same designs flow from antique garment to antique garment , don't they?

Even the sleeves have embroidery on them.  And the workmanship is fine!
