Elizabeths Quilt

Liz has been one of my most enthusiastic Quilt admirers.

Now, her quilt is finished (and in time for her birthday).

I asked her what colors she likes and she told me she wanted something "Girly".

I bought a pack of 10" Squares from this fabric line.

This fabric is from Lecien called Rococo and Sweet.  It is really much prettier than you can tell from my photos.  I think it is girly.

And I stitched them together on point.  Then sewed borders around the quilt.  I love this quilt. It's bright and happy.

I love just about any fabric from Lecien.

My Brown Dog is a little bored today.

On the day she was coming over I was finishing stitching the label to the Quilt Back.

(always a last minute person!)

I like to hand embroider my Quilt Labels.

My Neighbors Old Baby Quilts

This is a close up of an embroidered kitten stitched on a Baby Quilt.

As I was visiting my quilting neighbor she had a stack of Baby Quilts that she was in the process of washing and hanging to dry.

The edging is a Satin Blanket Binding….Babies love them!

This was  pre-stamped fabric, ready to be embroidered, stitched into a quilt and then quilted.

She made this in 1967 for one of her Babies.

Hanging a quilt outside to dry will help get rid of old age spots.

This quilt was made for her Granddaughter.

It's an ABC quilt.  The squares were stitched with bright fabric, then hand quilted.

Every time I see a quilt that uses  this soft blue fabric I am just more convinced that I love it best!

Mary's Antiques and Collectibles

                            

There is an antique shop in Ponchatoula, Louisiana that has a section full of all things sewing related.  And alot of quilts.  Old.  Old but newly quilted.  And new quilts custom made by Mary. 

It is a very interesting place for any person who loves to sew.

She sells embroidered linens

She had quilts and pillowcases (embroidered of course!) and some old fabrics.

I am very interested in Redwork and she has several old examples.

I went there looking for a small sample to show in my Redwork classes.

And found my sample.  And more!

Lunch in My Sewing Room

My Friend Bunny and I are stitching a Block of the Month quilt together.

(it's her idea!)

So, she came over to stitch with me and we had lunch in the sewing room.

Which was fun!

And I finished my first block.

Blue Quilt at Sew Sew's

My Sew Sew's group got together recently and we had show and tell.

This is Belinda's completed Blue and White Quilt.

Gorgeous!!

On the back of the quilt, she stitched a label. 

 The label is ready for her to write all the information about the quilt she made.  She used the same professional quilter that I used for my Granddaughters quilt.  She stitched the label on before having it quilted so it was "quilted" into the back of the quilt.

I love it!

Victoria's Quilt

Here is the quilt Victoria and I  made.  Or rather, the quilt top.

Ready to go to the machine Quilter.  

 I knew just the machine Quilter I wanted to finish it.  I had seen her work on a quilt long before I ever knew who she was.  And I really, really liked it.  

This happy quilt is on the  cutting table being measured and looked over as we try to decide on the "quilting pattern" for Victorias quilt.

This is all new to me!

 To be honest, until my visit to Charlenes'  I didn't realize there were so many machine quilting patterns.   She has a book with oodles of them.  How to choose?

Lucky for me, she knows which patterns will look good on different quilts.

This is her quilting machine.  Wow!! 

 It takes up a whole room.

Love the name of her business.  

Next post I will show you her work spaces (sewing room!).

I went home and cleaned my own sewing room for about 5 hours and I'm not done yet!!

Binge Sewing or Day 8

This is the result of sewing late, late, late into the night and all day today!!

We have Victoria's (and Grams!) quilt almost completely done.  She goes home tonight!

Fun! Old State Capital/Stitching Exhibit

It might seem odd.  

But one of my favorite things about the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge was the marble floor in the Ladies Room.  The entrance had WOMEN engraved in it as you entered.

No question I was going into the right toilet!

It is a beautiful building. The Baton Rouge Old State Capitol.

Stained glass ceiling and rich old wood.

My eye was pleased everywhere I looked.

I am  looking down from the top of the spiral staircase.

Every room is artistically done.  You would be hard pressed to find the artisans who could reproduce the workmanship in this building. It is fabulous.

Imagine working in it everyday as was once the case. Shoes clicking importantly on the marble floors.  I can imagine it.  Women in smart dresses  and men in suits.

One thing I wish we as a people would do, is to appreciate  the beauty of the old buildings we have and keep them.  We tend to tear them down and replace them with something "new" or "efficient" but not nearly as lovely.  We need beauty for our soul.

That is the message I received from this exhibit.  That women could find and create beauty from whatever was available.

Women know this!  We need beauty for our soul.

A Friend and I went to the free exhibit titled "Our Quilted Past" but it is really about how our Grandmothers used Feed sacks for clothing as well as Quilts.

Our Quilted Past

An exhibit of quilts made from feed and flour sacks between 1925 and 1955 and the story of recycling cotton bags into household items.

Have More Fun in 2014!

things to do!

Have more fun!  Purposeful fun!  Lookin for it fun!

I'm making my fun list!

Reflecting on four fun things last year…in no order

I went to Paris with my sister, Kathy.

(that fun included fabric and classes)

I went to NYC with my daughter and two Granddaughters.

(that fun included three plays and a Ballet - no fabric)

I went on a road trip with my husband to Iowa.

(that fun included LOTS of fabric, fabric shops, museums of fabric and antique garments)

A trip to Cleveland to visit my sister.

(fun to sit and stitch with her!)

Things I want to do more of this coming year are:

1.  Have friends over for Tea and Stitching.

2.  Stitch more in front of the fire.

3.  Have more dinners with my kids.

4.  Go to more musical events and movies

5.  Stitch lovely baby gowns.

Oh, and for flexible goals?  I did get my first ever quilt basted and ready to quilt by the new year.   I love the way it looks and hope I don't mess it up with my abysmal quilting stitches.  But I am sure to get better if I …Practice!!

Stitching By The Fire

Another lovely morning by the fire!

Sweet Brown Dog is keeping me company, as usual.

I have been stitching on this quilt for a year now.

The "Project Box" has gotten decidedly bigger as my quilt enlarges.

Lots of little stitches keeping that fabric together!

I am now stitching the outside border around this quilt.  That means I am almost done with the piecing!!  

My goal was to get it ready to quilt before Christmas.  I don't think that's going to happen.  I still have the two long sides of the border to attach as well as stitching the backing to fit.

Lucky for me I am happy to re-arrange my goals rather than be dismayed.

In fact, when I started this quilt, my goal was to finish it by Christmas time this year.  

Goals have a purpose but you can't let them dictate your happiness.

But, I won't give up until Christmas.  

You never know!

Pretty Fabric For My Granddaughter

Lovely fabric, chosen with Miah in mind.

I am going to make a quilt with my Granddaughter.  

Never mind that I have only started quilts but never actually made one!

She ironed all 20 Fat Quarters.

And I cut them into 4" squares. We're a team!

I will never allow her to use my Rotary Cutter. 

 I use it but am deathly afraid of it!

Our plan is to sew two squares together until all of them have a partner.

Then arrange it in a pretty way. 

The fabric is melt in your mouth delicious!!
