Toddler Summer Dresses - Shadow Embroidery

This little dress was made by a Friend.
She used the Toddler Summer Dresses pattern and an embroidery design from Best Embroidered Baby Clothes 2.

This is the same dress, full view, but with the embroidery design that comes in the Dress pattern.

I like the way the yoke on this dress is perfect for stitching whatever design you heart desires!

Tucks and narrow Swiss trim at the hem.

So cute for summer!

The hem was stitched with two strands of matching embroidery floss.
Cute touch!

Memphis Vintage Tea Towel.

Very pretty towel.
My host in Memphis took me to an antique shop and I came away with this treasure.

It is made from Huck toweling.  And the flowers are so pretty.
Bright and cheerful colors.

I want to reproduce it.
But probably not in a Tea Towel.  And I might use different stitches. So that is not exactly reproducing it, is it?

Flowers are stitched with Satin Stitching.  And the hemstitching is a nice touch.

I don't think it is really a Tea Towel because it is so large.
I thought it would be just the thing to dry my china and silver after special dinners.

Is that strange?

Green Baby Daygown

Baby's Frist Daygowns pattern by The Old Fashioned Baby.
This is my little green Daygown.
I've shown you this Daygown before.

Today, I want to point a couple of things out to you.  Like the lace insertion.  This gown  is the same style Daygown as the white gown in the last post except the fabric behind the lace has not been cut away.  It gives it a slightly different look.
See the difference?

I also  Pinstitched the back pleat, just like I stitched the white Daygown.  I love doing that.  The directions for the Pinstitched pleat are in the current Sew Beautiful magazine.

Nosy Brown Dog!

He had to see what I was doing as I was photographing the green Daygown.

Daygowns are wonderful!

Sew Beautiful Magazine - My White Daygown

This is my White Daygown that was featured in the Sew Beautiful Magazine - Baby Issue.

I made a kit for this Daygown using all the same materials that I used on mine.

It has a very sweet Lace Edging embellishing it.
One of my favorites.
And I love this fancy entredeux around the neck.

I trimmed the fabric from behind the lace and worked a machine Pin Stitch around the lace.

But the feature of this Daygown is the pleat in the back.
I finished it using a hand Pin Stitch.
That is what the Sew Beautiful article is about.
Instructions are in the magazine about how to do this.

This is what the Pin Stitched inverted pleat looks like on the inside of the Daygown.

Next post I will show you the green Daygown that is similar but I didn't cut the fabric from behind the lace.    I used the same technique on the back pleat.
I love Daygowns!

This is my White Wednesday!

Tea With My Granddaughter

After we had Tea, we went to an Antique Shop  to look around and I found these Pillowcases.
My Granddaughter liked looking at the old stuff and I was very happy.

We were celebrating my Granddaughters 13th Birthday and I wanted it to be special.
My daughter  came  with us which made it even nicer.

It was alot of fun to have Tea in a real Tea Room.  But I was able to see that I do a pretty good job myself of doing a tea.  Still, going out for tea was a treat.

The staff at the shop did go to some effort to make it a special day for her and she was very pleased.

Back to the Pillowcase....I love the pretty flowers.
And the machine Hemstitching that was used as a design element.

The back of the embroidery shows you how they carried the threads in an organized fashion.

To all you antique dealers.

NEVER pin the price tag into the fabric.  It often breaks the threads and creates holes that enlarge with washing.  We need a little more tender loving care out there!

Next stop for these pillowcases...on my bed!

Ahhhh....!

Working on Shadow Embroidery with the sun as my light!

Then, took a little break to walk down to the beach....
do I look content or what?
....to sit under a beach umbrella!

View from our balcony - Orange beach  Alabama
A friend and I went to the beach for a few days over spring break to get some sewing work done.

It was totally wonderful.
On the way home we stopped at an Outlet Mall.
I liked the flowers on the collar of this dress.

Bullions and French Knots.

Click to enlarge and you will see that this dress is NOT smocked.  The threads are manipulated on the surface to simulate smocking.

Nothing like the real thing!

I love that SAGA promotes real Smocking!!
Support your local (or National) Smocking Guild or the dress above could be our future.

Memphis...The Prettiest Little Smocked Dress!

The is the cutest little smocked dress ever.

The fabric is soft and worn.  I love it!
It belongs to Leslie and she plans to copy it.  I can't wait to see it when she finishes it.

I would like to make it too, perhaps using my Smocked Emma pattern.

I always love blue and white.
The skirt was attached to the yoke with Entredeux.

And it has a perky little sash in the back.

Thanks Leslie.
I love your dress!!

This is my White Wednesday!

Memphis - More...

I saw this beautiful dress while teaching for  the Memphis Area Smocking Guild.

I told you in the last post that the ladies in the Memphis Guild were a "stitching bunch".

Here you see Leslie stitching on a dress instead of taking breaks.
She did have a real need to stitching it up, though.  It was to be worn by a little girl the next day for an Easter Egg hunt!  Talk about pressure.

Women who sew know about pressure!

Of course there was a matching Easter Bonnet.

Leslie stitched lace under the fabric ruffle to give it body and help the ruffle stand out.

The set was beautiful!

I sure would have liked to have seen the little girl wearing this outfit!

Memphis...lovely Netting Sacque and Bonnet

This Sacque is made from English Netting (the read deal) and is lined with blue silk.

It has a matching Bonnet.

The Bonnet is also lined with silk and is trimmed with pretty lace.

There are tucks on the back of the Sacque...on the netting only.
The tucks give the back more wiggle room.

To create additional room in the lining, there is an inverted pleat.

I love the way the lace edging is stitched on either side of the lace insertion on the sleeve edge.  It's also  stitched  along the front edge.

Thank you Virginia for sharing your wonderful clothes with me!
