Victoria and Albert - Textiles 9

I really love this style.

I feel like just about anyone would look attractive in this.

(with a little under garment help!)

Victoria and Albert - Textiles 8

Beautiful white  blouse.

These fashions make me feel a little frumpy in my normal clothes!

Victoria and Albert Museum - Textiles 7

Beautiful example of White work.

The illustration below shows the collar tied.  I think it was left loose for us to see the detail and the extensive stitching done on it.

And the necessary under garments to give it the proper shape.

This museum is  amazing!

Victoria and Albert Museum - Textiles 6

Love this dress!

The embroidered fabric reminds me of one I have (machine made of course).

Click on this photo to see the hem of this gown.

A beautiful form of Whitework.

Victoria and Albert Museum - Textiles 5

Bespoke Fashion according to Wikipedia (click to find out much more - as in "made to measure" vs "bespoke" :

Meaning of the term[edit]

The word "bespoke" itself is derived from the verb "bespeak", to speak for something, in the specialised meaning "to give order for it to be made".[3] The term bespoke in fashion is reserved for individually patterned and crafted men's clothing, analogous to women's haute couture,[4] in contrast with mass-manufactured ready-to-wear (also called off-the-peg or off-the-rack). The term originated from Savile Row, a street in London considered the "Golden Mile of tailoring".[5]

Everything changed with World War II

Albert and Victoria - Textiles 4

At  the Victoria and Albert museum there are free tours through out the day.

We went on the Medieval and Renaissance Tour.

I love the muted and lovely colors.

I wonder how they looked hundreds of  years ago.

Victoria and Albert Museum - Textiles 3

I am continuing my post from England….interrupted by life…and some of the textiles I saw.

This is a close up of a Quilt dating from  circa 1380.

Intricate stitches.

Click to enlarge for more detail.

The Victoria and Albert museum is one of the most amazing places I have ever been.

London - V&A Embroidered Picture

Silk applique and silk embroidery.

"A Liberty of London catalogue shows the design for this embroidery  reproduced in different formats for small home accessories.  Such as a lamp shade, printed cushion and a night dress case."
written on  the sign below the embroidery

I believe this was produced at the Glasgow School of Art

London V&A - Cute Tennis Outfit

As we moved into the 20th century, I saw this ladies tennis dress.

My eye went straight to the Hemstitching at the neck and the pockets.

London- V & A Birth, Marriage and Death

This small exhibit was titled "Birth, Marriage and Death.
circa 1850 to 1900

On the left is a very low cut and frilly Wedding Gown.  The black gown on the right is a Mourning Gown.

If you look way up to the left you will see a Christening Gown.

The Christening Gown was positioned in such an awkward way that it was impossible to get a good photograph.

I was able to take a picture of the hem and front.
You can see that the entire front panel was a delicate lace that continues around the hem.  The base fabric looks like a fine woven cotton and has several tucks along the hem.

Since this small exhibit  spanned 50 years, there is a lot left to the imagination.

I would like an exhibit  that has  50 years of Christening Gowns from simple families right up to the Royal family.

This seems to be a death announcement for Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's beloved husband.
 I didn't realize he was only 43.

The Queens Mourning Hanky is exquisite.
I would like the information to include where they would commission such a finely stitched piece.

There is always so much more to know!

London - V&A Wedding Outfit Circa 1851

Who doesn't love a Wedding Dress?

This one is made from cotton muslin and lined with linen.
Made in England around 1851.

The bodice of the dress is simple in design.

But the lace veil would have transformed the Bride who wore it.

Here you can see the intricate lace design of the veil on the left.  On the right we see  the pretty ruffles at the lower part of the skirt.

I can imagine the ruffles on the skirt of a little girls dress.  Or maybe three ruffles to finish the bottom of a Christening Gown.   Do you see it?

London - V & A Museum

The Vintage purse is elegant in design.

If I were a purse designer, this would be part of my current collection.

London - V & A Museum Two

Dress making in the past required skills that few people possess today.

The Museum can help us to examine the techniques used to make these garments.

Seeing the inside of a garment will show us the secrets.

London - V&A Museum One

Going to the Victoria & Albert Museum was top on my list of reasons to be in London.

We took an introductory tour of the V & A.  The guide showed us some of the highlights of the collections concerning textiles.

As a designer, I can learn many things that will help me in my business.

The costumes will inspire me to re-create a look or a technique that I can apply to my own designs.

This outfit dates from 1910 to 1912.
