Airport Art - Every Piece a Conversation!

I loved this exhibit at the airport as I was arriving into Winston Salem (Greensboro Airport).

I took more time to see it as I was waiting for my plane to leave.

The dog is my favorite.

He looks just like my Brown Dog.
(maybe everyone thinks he looks like their dog)

But don't you think he looks like a Lab?

And just like that!
The Saga National Convention was over.

And we all had a read good time!!!

More Saga Fun!

I also taught beginning Shadow Embroidery.

This is a beautiful embroidery technique and so easy to stitch!

This design is from my Embroidery Book.

I'm so happy that my raffle Basket of Buttons and Other OFB Treasures went to someone who I know will love them.

Saga National - Baby's French Bonnet Class

This is the Little French Bonnet's Fancy Band. It was stitched by a student.
As a teacher I think this is an excellent class to learn Heirloom Sewing.

Students learn great techniques.  They have the experience of working on a real project, where you always do your best work.  And the bonnet is well on the way to completion by the end of the six hour class.  Win - Win!!

This old Singer Sewing machine did a wonderful job at Heirloom Sewing.

Just goes to show you don't have to have a machine with all the bells and whistles.

This is my finished Bonnet.

"Baby Bonnets 1" Pattern available.

Pre-Day Convention Fun

We are still in the Quilt Room in the museum tour of Old Salem.

I am partial to Blue and White.

Blue with White Poka Dots!

And alot of intricate hand work besides.

Jane made this quilt and I think her signature is unique.

It is made using Trapunto work.

Lovely!

This was a child's quilt and I really do love this.

I think I could even make it.  Anyway, one day I hope to try!

See how tiny and even these hand quilting stitches are!

My stitches certainly won't look like this but that's ok....I can aspire to it.

Finally, I thought you would like to read this.  You can click on the photo to enlarge so you can read a bit of information concerning the Boarding School for Female Education.

For everyone who wasn't with us...I am so sorry you missed a great time!

More Pre-Day Convention Fun

I love Lace!

And I am always excited to see paintings that  have details of pretty Lace.

What a fine job the artist did portraying the beauty of this  fine delicate Lace.

Next in the textile collection was the Quilt Room.

Today this would be called a Whole Cloth Quilt. Which is one piece of fabric quilted all over.

Trapunto, where padding is inserted under the fabric,  was included in the design of the quilt.

Isn't it Stunning?

More to come!

Saga Convention Pre-Day Fun......

Moving along on our Old Salem museum tour..."What in the world are these", you might ask!
(my first thoughts were....fishing weights)

They are Dress Elevators.

Who knew such a thing existed!

It made a Fashion Statement when you clipped the skirt up in an artful manner.  I'm sure someone had to do it for you!

Join me next post for more to see.....

Saga National Convention FUN!!

Susie Gay and I went on the Saga Pre-Day Tour.
It was an organized tour of Old Salem

The Saga National Convention in Winston Salem was wonderful!
From Pre-Day to the absolute end.

A Pub lunch was included and was very tasty!

Despite the dreadful Hurricane prior to Convention, the weather was fine.

We had free time to walk around the little historical village.

Our very knowledgeable guide is showing us a Sewing Cabinet.
And a pre-arranged guided tour of the museum.

We were shown many of the stitched Samplers in their collection.

Amazing that such young girls did this beautiful work.

More from the Museum next Post.

Saga 2016 - Featherstitching 101

Last Friday,  I was excited to be teaching  Featherstitching.

It's just the best stitch ever….

If you click to enlarge the photo, you will see it stitched along the edge of the French Acadian Sundress.  When stitched using a floss that is the same color as the fabric, it adds subtle beauty.

When you Featherstitch in a contrasting color Floss it really makes a design statement.

In the case  of the Featherstitching on the Bonnet above, you can see the single Featherstitch and the Old Fashioned Double Featherstitch look quite different but go together so well.

"If  you were to learn just one embroidery stitch,
I would urge it to be the Feather Stitch"

Saga 2016 - Handsewn Baby Clothes

Saturdays class was fun.

All about hand sewing Baby Clothes!

I will have more pictures of this little dress in the future because I will offer it as a pattern. It's very, very sweet!

Saturday Night was the Banquet.  I love, love, love to be together in a room full of women like me.  Who love to sew!!

Jeannie and friends!!
One of the best part of the Saga Convention is seeing friends.

A week ago today and we only had one day left before the much anticipated Saga National Convention was over.

Saturday and Sunday Class at the Saga Chicago Retreat

Fridays class features wonderful embroidery worked on the fabric that will be a Baby Dress.

We will also be stitching a sample of Entredeux to Fabric and Lace to Entredeux.

And learn how to make an old fashioned baby placket
And learn the best way to stitch gathered lace down the front of this sweet dress.

We are changing up some of the stitches from the original design.

We will be substituting some Bullion Flowers with a Shaded Eyelet and including both the French Eyelet and the Buttonhole Eyelet as the center of a flower.

Having happy days!

Where is Jeannie?

Well, I'm in Orlando at The National Smocking Arts Guild of course, with all the cool kids!

Today is our first class day (not counting pre-days) and everyone is excited!

The first class I'm teaching is my Playing with Lace - Heirloom Pillowcase.

We are learning how to Pinstitch over applique cord and miter lace.

And we are shaping lace so we can go home and make that portrait dress we've been afraid to do.

And stitching embroidery!

Stitching gathered Lace Edging so it is pretty and even is important to every garment that has lace on it.

And the pesky question about how you cross over laces nicely.

Our finished project!

The really best part though…..is seeing old friends and meeting new ones!
