Sew Sew Show and Tell English Nainsooks

Someone brought this old box of English Nainsook she was given.

You used to be able to buy some fabrics in a box of 10 yards.

The words English Nainsook is printed right on the fabric - as well as the yardage.

This fabric was often used for baby clothes and women's fine  undies!

A definition found on line:

Nainsooks was a fine, soft-finished cotton fabric, usually white used for lingerie and infants' wear of South Asian origin.

The meaning of the work Nainsook - Late 18th century: from Hindi nainsukh, from nain "eye"+sukh "pleasure"

I love that meaning!  Eye pleasure.

Click here for Information from an old  Good Housekeeping dated 1893.

I wish I could go shopping back in the 1920's.

Just for a day!!

Stitching With My Sew Sews

There was some stitching going on at my Sew Sews.

Lorraine B. was stitching gathered Lace edging to  a Bonnet Crown.

She finished attaching the lace.  So pretty!

Lorraine used a regular Bonnet Pattern and cut out the Bonnet and the Crown and stitched them together.  The Lace Edging serves as the Front.

We have some fancy stitchers in our group!!

Sew Sews in August

I had a great time with my Sew Sews this month.  Plenty of  pretty stitching going on.

The Bear is  from quite a long time ago when Jan Kerton came to teach a class.
Her lovely techniques can still be seen in our projects!

This is Lorraine B's cute Baby Blanket.

I love the kite made out of cute 30's fabric!

And the perfect bias binding is the same fabric as one of her kites.

Laura's Lunch Table was lovely.

The Crepe Myrtle center piece looked like spring.

I love fresh flowers.

There is more to see…..next post.

Hand Fluter at Mary's Antiques and Collectables

I love old, useful things!
And I saw this when I was at Mary's antique store the other day.

This is a Hand Fluter Iron.

It was used to press crimps or little pleats in collars and cuffs for fancy clothing.

I think it's really cool!

Cute Smocking from Mary's Antiques and Collectables

This is a cute little Smocked Diaper Shirt.

It was for sale at Mary's Antiques and Collectibles in Ponchatoula when I stopped by the other day.

It is very crisp and perky with the pink and blue smocking against a soft white fabric.

And I love the old fashioned Bullion Flowers!

My Antique Quilt Stand

Quilt I made displayed on my Antique Quilt Stand.
I have always admired  Quilt Stands.

And I now have one myself.

I found this at Mary's Antiques and Collectables.

It looks fragile but it is very sturdy.

Mary's is a wonderful shop!!

Mary's Antiques and Collectibles

There is an antique shop in Ponchatoula, Louisiana that has a section full of all things sewing related.  And alot of quilts.  Old.  Old but newly quilted.  And new quilts custom made by Mary.

It is a very interesting place for any person who loves to sew.

She sells embroidered linens

She had quilts and pillowcases (embroidered of course!) and some old fabrics.

I am very interested in Redwork and she has several old examples.

I went there looking for a small sample to show in my Redwork classes.

And found my sample.  And more!

…tune in next post to see….more..

Bunny and Me - Quilt Update

Just completed another Block!

Bunny and I began stitching Block One in July 2014.  Yes, all twelve blocks were supposed to be done in one year.  But I'm pretty happy with what we've done.   Really, it was an excuse to get together.  So the Quilt will be lagniappe!!

Two more blocks to go.

Quilting is sewing too!

Stitching On My Featherweight!

My Featherweight Sewing Machine once belonged to my Mother.
It's a little worse for wear but stitches beautifully.

My Granddaughter is helping me stitch this quilt.

She is the third generation to sew on this machine.
Well, if my Grandmother used it too, then she is the fourth.

Victoria.
I am so happy my 16 year old Granddaughter likes to sew with me.
And she's good!

Old Shoo Fly Quilt pattern. I was trying out colors for the sashing.  Blue it will be!

I decided to stitch these Quilt Blocks together using my Featherweight.
The quilt is for my oldest son and I think it will be extra special made on my Mothers old Sewing Machine.

I love sewing on it.

I love that my Mother once sat in front of it.  That she touched the same levers as I touch and wound the bobbin like I am doing now.  It makes me happy. You never stop missing your Mother.

I love the mechanical sound of it, too.
I'm thinking about making a Daygown with it!

"Emma Smocked Baby Dresses"(but NOT Smocked!)

This lovely creature is my pattern Emma's Smocked Baby Dresses.

But, as you can see, it is not smocked!

How do you change the pattern?  Simple.  Don't smock it.  Just gather the top instead.

That's all there is to it!

This would be your classic "Heirloom Lacy" Yoke Dress.

I fancied up the sleeves to match.
And added beading, making the fit of the sleeve  adjustable.

The hem is a frothy lace concoction.

And I love the soft ecru with the pale blue voile.

The dress back is still classic Emma, with the sweet tucks.

And who needs smocking with the lace frill around the yoke.

Now for a bit of construction photos...

You can see my Yoke Front pattern piece on top of my finished embellished fabric.
To make the fancy yoke, I stitched  my lace design into a "Block" of embellished fabric.
I made it big enough to fit my Yoke Front pattern piece.

I folded my embellished fabric wrong sides together along the center front.  I did this so I could be sure the lace on either side matched up, as well as the center lace band.

Then I cut out my Yoke Front and went right to the sewing machine to stay stitch my embellished edges.

Voila! Yoke done.

I made a fancy band for each sleeve and stitched them to the sleeve center.
Then I trimmed the lace to match the sleeve.

I cut the beading the correct size and matched the center of my beading to the center of my sleeve.

I have instructions for adding entredeux to a sleeve..HERE.

I gathered the sleeve to fit the beading.  But I didn't gather the sleeve as much where the fancy band was.  I did gather it but with less gathers.  I finished the entredeux technique.
Then gathered lace to fit the sleeve.  Instructions …HERE.

And now I have two pretty sleeves ready to be attached to the dress.

I am totally in love with this lace band!

Swiss Insertion - White or Champagne

It is gorgeous.

"Baby Emma" Smocked Bonnet

Fancy Smocked Bonnet instructions comes in the pattern Emma's Smocked Baby Dresses.

It has a fold back brim that is pleated and smocked.
The bonnet back is tied with a ribbon which makes it adjustable.

This lace edging on this bonnet was attached using a machine Pinstitch (Pfaff Machine).  I used a fine thread (#80 Madeira) and a large machine needle, size 90.

Did you notice the little Bullion flower where the ribbon attaches to the bonnet?

Sweet on any Baby!
