Paris Sister Trip - Paris Days

Cute window display!!

We started our day with  breakfast in the Hotel Innova every morning.
It was all laid out ready for us!

And we added extra from the serving table nearby.

Every other morning there was a Chocolate Croissant.  And we were promptly asked what we wanted to drink with breakfast...Cafe, Cafe au lait, Tea or Chocolate?

We got tons of exercise walking up and down the stairs of the Metro so the Chocolate Croissants were not a problem!

I finally saw the Musee d'Orsay.
 Home to many Impressionist paintings.

We took a tour at the museum where we learned that we have more Impressionist paintings in the USA than France because no one in France would buy them during the period they were being painted.

The Musee d'Orsay used to be an old Train Station (think - movie "Hugo"!)

I wanted to take my sister back to the cafe where I had lunch with my Class tutor.
We sought out the Rutabaga cafe for lunch one day.

It was as good as I remembered!!

Kathy enjoyed it too!!

Police on bikes.

And beauty everywhere.

It was a fun day!

Paris Sister Trip - Whitework Class in Paris

I had NO trouble finding my way back to the Shop following  my landmarks and notes (see previous post!).

I was taking a class to learn how the Padded Satin Stitch and the Split Padded Satin Stitch were done in France.  Or, I think it would be better to say ...how this teacher worked these stitches.

I  purchased the thread and needles at the shop, just to make sure I had the correct materials.
I came prepared with pencil and note book to take notes and draw stitch illustrations.  I knew my instructor spoke just a little English and I did not know any French.

My Instructor, Veronique, is very talented at her work and had a piece of Linen ready for me with my initials stamped on it.

She started at the beginning and I watched what she did.

She lent me her hoop as I was completely unprepared in the hoop area.
She used a large hoop on a stand.  This type of embroidery is done with one hand under the hoop and the other hand on top of the hoop for best results.

First we outline the initial, then pad it.

Finally, Satin Stitch around it.

There were three other women in the class with me.  I think each was a "regular" student in her Monday morning class and they were each working on a different project.

They were very nice and friendly but did not speak much English.  The class room was very quiet.  They did not talk among themselves during class.  They were very serious about the work they were doing.

I loved the way they set up their "work station".

They laid a linen towel down on the table and put out their needle work tools so they would all be at the ready.  Like us, each one had their own favorite way to  store supplies.  Tin boxes seemed the most popular.  I relate to that!!

Lights and Magnification were necessary and everyone had them.

Tweezers were also a very necessary part of the class supplies and I discovered why before the day was over.

The student who was sitting near me was working on a complex project and her work was very good.

After working all morning, I was tired and ready for lunch.

Veronique invited me to go with her and another student to a nearby cafe.  In the spirit of experiencing the true France, I ordered the same thing they did for lunch. It was a good decision.  The "Plat" included everything, even  drink and dessert (you had a choice in each item).  I did choose a different dessert. They had yogurt.  I ate Chocolate.

A wise choice.  It was heavenly!

Only one other student returned for the afternoon session but there were three new (regular- Monday) students there for the afternoon.  Each with their own on-going projects to work on.
And a quiet afternoon was spent stitching.

 Again, after greetings...no chatting.

I came back from lunch and un-stitched the middle portion of my initial.  I could not have un stitched it nearly so well with out the handy tweezers Veronique handed to me.

Then I re-stitched it.

The day went by quickly and I was sorry I would not be returning with them all the following Monday.
Veronique was a good, patient and kind teacher.  The French/English barrier was not too much of a problem because I could learn from watching her for the most part.  I think it would have been difficult if I had not already known how stitch.

It was such a wonderful day!
And will remain fond in my memory for a long time.

Paris Sister Trip -Visiting `Des Fils Et Une Aiguille

The window display was very pretty.

Des Fils Et Une Aiguille is a pretty little Needlework Shop in Paris.
I love the Blue color the front is painted!

There were pretty things all over the shop and tucked into the corners.

Although I am primarily interested in embroidering clothing, she had many things to tempt me!

Lots of Threads, Ribbons, Scissors, Needles, fabrics......and etc.

I really like the Linen pieces that were finished and stamped ready to embroidery.

I made a couple purchases and left, paying close attention to the route I was walking to the Metro, so I could find my way back for class.

This square was to be one of my main  landmarks.  It was across from an elementary school and right around the corner from the shop!

I marked the Metro Stop on my map!
Bourse Metro

Now, I'm ready!!

Paris Sister Trip - Looking for the Needlework Shop

I had arranged to take a Whitework Class at a shop in Paris. I  was determined to find it before the day of the class. Paris streets are so tricky!

But wandering around can lead you to some surprising places.

Painting in the Fragonard Perfume shop.
We went in a Fragonard  Perfume shop and upstairs they had a little display of perfume items.

We could not decide if it was "The" Fragonard museum or not.
I loved the paintings.  All having to do with  the toilette.

We also wandered by (totally by accident) the French Restaurant (Le Grand Colbert)  featured in the final part of the Diane Keaton/Jack Nickolson movie  "Somethings Gotta Give". We planned to go back to eat there....but it didn't happen. Still, it was fun to peek in the window.

Don't you love the places for scooters and bikes to park?
It was not easy to find this Needlework shop  so thank goodness I discovered it before Class Day!

Lovely Window Display in the shop!

I'll take you inside next post!....until then..

Pairs Sister Trip - Snow in Paris

I had wished for a day in Paris where it would snow.
I got my wish!  We woke up to snow in Paris and I was happy!!

We started our day with the Gregorian Chant service in Notre Dame.
It was beautiful.

Some more walking about in the freezing snow.  The kind that melts when it hits you!  OK, enough snow, I only wanted a glimpse!!

Charvin Art Supplies - in Paris since 1830
We took respite in this marvelous Art Shop.
And enjoyed ourselves very much.

Then we toured La Sainte-Chapelle
It is amazing.

The beautiful domed ceiling of the lower Chapel.

Then you walk up the stairs to the Kings Chapel and the beauty is overwhelming.  My photos don't begin to do it justice.

It took my breath away!

We finished our day with a trip to Angelina's Tea Salon for their famous Hot Chocolate. It was every bit as good as the guide book said it would be.  The quote was:

"Hot Chocolate worth flying to Paris for"!

Au Revoir for now....

Paris Sister Trip - Paris Flea Market

Ah, a Paris Flea Market.

One of my Dreams come True!

And I was not diappointed!

I found many vintage linens.  Although no little baby gowns, unfortunately.

There were many items with exquisite monograms.

And everyday napkins with initials done in both fine and rough cross stitch.

This little silk childs dress interested me because of the Honeycomb smocking at the shoulders, and the hemstitching on the yoke.

The back of the dress had several tucks at either side.

The only fine lace I saw in France was antique lace.
That seems very odd, doesn't it?

One man had a table piled high with old button cards.

This booth really interested me.

There were lots of sewing items, old fabrics, old shop advertisments and some partially finished fine needlework which will be perfect to show my Whitework Class at the Saga Needlearts Retreat in Pa this April.

Here I am parting (gladly) with my money.

I barely had enough money left over for a cup of tea and a pastry afterward.

I had so much fun!!
