Saga Convention Class - Shadow Embroidery

Beginning Shadow Embroidery project is a little Pillow Slip.

I will be teaching Beginning Shadow Embroidery at the Saga Convention in Frisco, Texas.

If I get around to it, I will have this nightie pattern at the Saga Market.
Sweet and comfortable. Embellished in the same design.

Cute enough for a summer dress.

I love the look of Shadow Embroidery.
It looks like it would be tricky but it's  a pretty easy stitch.

Hope I'll see you at Saga Convention!

Daygown Design and Saga Retreat!

I  LOVE Baby Daygowns!
and
I  LOVE Designing!

I have  combined these two loves into one great class.

Daygown Design and Application Class!

What do the following pictures have in common?
Look close!
Cute little boy in a taylored Daygown.
Daygowns are the mainstay of every baby's wardrobe.

In this class we will explore many, many different looks that you can create for Daygowns.

This Daygown features old fashioned "under-tucks" for additional fullness.
Thy can have Tucks and pretty embroidery.

They can be made for Special Occasions.

OK, did you figure out what the four pictures had in common?  Yes, they are all daygowns, but that isn't the answer.

The Answer:  They are all made from the same Daygown pattern. Baby's First Daygowns.
But all of  the above designs are not included in the pattern.

The trims, techniques and embellishments made them all different.

The blue book is one of my design notebooks that I have been filling with ideas for years!

Sometimes I will pull out my books and create a different design using one of my patterns and elements from my design books.  The two pages of Daygown Embroidery in my Embroidery Book are an example.

In this class we will look at many ways we can create different designs, just like the old antique daygowns (two are never the same) and we will use one front button pattern.  Baby's First Daygowns.
Bring an old Daygown and we will discuss how to re-create it.

Tucks?  Gathers?  Pleats?

Frilly or Simple?

Then we will each choose and put together the elements we want and create our own special  Daygown.  That's the application part.  You get to apply what you are learning right in class before you go home and forget!    Fabric and Lace included.

Too much fun!!

And it's all happening at the first ever Saga Retreat in April, 2013.
Sign up early as classes are expected to fill at this event.

A Group of Cheerful Sewing Ladies

Aren't we a happy bunch?
This is the GNO SAGA group in New Orleans.  I was teaching a class for them over the weekend.

We were happy because they did such an excellent job stitching the class project!

Finished the tucks and Fancy Yoke band.

Nice!!

Now, to stitch the Fancy Band to the yoke piece.

She is weaving 4 strands of floss through the "entredeux" holes of the Swiss insertion.

This is my sample.
We are making Toddlers Summer Dress
The Tucked version.

Jane is the nice lady who I am staying with.  She has a fantastic button collection.  And amazing antique needlework tools.  And a really cool sewing room.   More on that in a future post!

Next time:  Day Two with GNO Smocking Arts Guild!

SAGA National Convention in Atlanta - Class preview.

This beautiful little Bonnet is featured in a class I will be teaching in the fall for the Smocking Arts Guild of America National Convention (SAGA).  In Atlanta.

"Anna's Handsewn Baby Bonnet, Circa 1920".

Like the name implies, the class is a Hand Sewing class.  I have taught a Machine class using this Bonnet, but never a class devoted to Hand Stitching it.

This Bonnet has a History!

It is a reproduction of a Bonnet made in 1920 ish.  My friend, Jamie, owns it and you can read more about the Bonnet  HERE.

Even Sewing Machine Die Hards should know how to stitch by hand.
There are just some things that are better done by hand.

But by and large, it will appeal to those students who love to work with their hands.  It is perfect for women  who want to know how to put these hand sewing skills into practice. And they will make a Baby Bonnet in just the way it was stitched to begin with.

It is a 9 hour class which is great because you will have one full day and another 1/2 day to learn the techniques well and work on your little bonnet.

Fun.... just waiting to happen!

Sunday At Saga and a Birthday!

This is a class that I teach for SAGA.  I am not teaching it this year though.  It is all about Bonnets.

And today (Sunday, September 26)  is my daughters Birthday.

Baby Shawna
She didn't miss a meal!!  Good rich Mothers Milk! I was an Earth Mother. Child of the late 60's and 70's!  I  Loved Natural!!  My kids didn't even know they gave out lollipops at the docters office!!

I made the blanket she is on while waiting for her to arrive.  It's yellow, because, of course, I didn't know she would be a Girl!!  That was before ultrasounds.    I embroidered pretty little flowers and designs on soft flannel, then lined it and stitched gathered eyelet around the edges.  I  loved that blanket!  We lost it somewhere in Arizona while driving home from California to visit my parents in Texas. We were off the beaten path to see a small Indian village where they still had a community oven. It was very interesting but there was much poverty which also made it sad.  I liked to imagine that a mother  found that blanket and used it for her own baby.

She is still just like this!!!  Such a Priss!!  And Cute!

This was taken when I was expecting her.  I made my maternity set.  I am playing with my son in the Yosemite river (inside Yosemite National Park) in California.  Clear and Cold and Beautiful water.  My long, long hair gives you a hint that it is the early 70's!

Bringing Baby home.
I certainly have a good grip on her!  Never dropped a baby yet!

Wearing a little pink dress with an Eyelet apron that her Aunt Kathy made her.
She is all grown up now!

Her Birth announcement reads:

She's soft and cuddly
and couldn't be sweeter.
She's our baby daughter and
We'd like you to meet her.

I arrive home from SAGA tonight!
And get to sleep in my own bed.  Yeah!!
(I  hope I had fun!)
