Sister Visit -New Orleans

Lovely White Dresses.
We took my niece to New Orleans to see the sights.

I popped into my favorite shop on Jackson Square while they looked at shoes.

The entire shop is filled with Linens and items made from Linens.

You would love it!

Me and my sister with a walking Garden.  Weird!
Jackson Square is filled with street performers.

New Orleans is decorated for Mardi Gras.

We stopped for lunch in this cute Courtyard Cafe.
There are courtyards everywhere in New Orleans.  I love them.

And you can't go to New Orleans without stopping for coffee at the Cafe Du Monde.

It was a fun day!

Sister Visit -Nottoway Plantation

This is a beautiful Sewing Caddy we saw. I guess it is from the mid 1800's.

My sister came to visit me.
One of the fun things we did... was visit Nottoway Plantation.

I wish they had filled it with time appropriate sewing items!
The inside scrollwork lifts out to place your project into a cubby.

Nottoway Plantation
The front faces the Mississippi River.
Wow!

My niece came for a visit too! (photo used with permission)
My sister and my niece are in front of the side entrance.

Yes.  I think I could sit on this porch and stitch quite nicely, thank you!

And I love the lace curtains in the windows.

My birthday cake was a King Cake.
If you don't know what that is...you haven't been to Louisiana at Mardi Gras time.
I had the needed help to blow out my candles!

I took an entire Birthday Week off to spend with my family.

And I had a great time!!

(Tomorrow I will answer phone calls, ship orders and respond to email.)

Thank you!

Fun Sister Vacation - Yarn!

See the green yarn on the table?
I love the color.  I picked it out.
Me and Kathy in the Yarn Shop!
You might not be able to tell it but my sister is slightly manic in this photo.  She has been on a "buy NO yarn" gig for almost a year.  And she fully intends to end it. Right now!

The green yarn in the first picture is the shawl she is knitting for me.
I plan to wear it at the Smocking Arts Guild National  Convention.  She is a fast knitter.

And I smocked.  I was working on a new design. Working at the Beach??

But, what fun work I do!
My Sister brought her Watercolors with her.
And some Watercolor Postcards too.  I had never heard of such a thing!
And I painted two postcards.

A day at the beach
is
like
well...a day at the beach!!

Just lovely in every way.

Fun Sister Vacation!

Ready to embroider Pillowcases!
My Sister came for a visit and we did fun things!  Like go antique shopping.

These pillowcases were sold in a package  together with other treasures.  The fabric they are made from is soft and closely  woven.  You can't find ready to embroider pillowcases of this quality today.

I am wondering why this fabric feels nicer that today's fabric that is a higher thread count!?  Notice the machine Hemstitching.  These are really nice!

Let me show you the rest of the package!
Do you see the lovely beach? Close to the Florida/Alabama state line.
Here they are displayed on the table, looking out over the Beach!!
Yes, we had a beach vacation!!  And a good thing we went when we did because the past several days have been a tropical storm!!  Our weather was perfect!

The pillowcases in the first photo were tucked inside the bag of goodies (all for $15) that included all of the above.  Three sets of pillowcases, each prettier than the first.  A pattern of embroidery designs to stamp on the pillowcases.  And an assortment of old embroidery hoops, which I collect.
Someone had begun to embroider this pillow case.  I have since ripped out the stitches so I can choose my own colors.

Two sets of the Pillowcases have Hemstitched hems.  Or Thread Drawn Hems, as the label calls them.
I love that the old labels were still on them!

My new collection of embroidery hoops!
The lady who owned them knew what she was about.  She had wrapped two of the hoops to give a more secure fit and protect the fabric.  My sister and I shared the bag of goodies but she let me have all the hoops!

See the two chairs down by the water?  Those chairs are for me and my Sister!~  It's early morning on the beach and the Beach Umbrella girl is setting up the chairs and umbrellas for the beach goers.
Me and my Sister. Beach Goers!
We had the fine fortune of going to the Gulf beach just before the storm came.  When the weather  was perfect, the water was clear and green and you could see all the fish swimming around your feet!  But NO Jelly Fish at all!!  And do you notice how no-one is on the beach?  School had started and it was a quiet, restful time!

Ahhh...

(wish I were still there)

This is my White Wednesday!
White Pillowcases and White Sand.

Last Sister Visit Post!

This Baby Bonnet was in the Rosedown Plantation exhibit.
The Bonnet features a stitch that I am in love with!  Bermuda Faggoting. It is an openwork technique I have taught as a sample class.  I want to teach it in a class where it is used as it was in old baby clothing.

We had Steel Cut Oatmeal with walnuts and Honey Crisp apples for breakfast.  How did I not know about  these apples? The taste is wonderful!!

Wow! three needles at the same time.
My sister knitted and we talked.

Strider is carefully appraising which treat he should choose for his birthday.
We took Strider to the Pet store for his birthday and bought him treats and toys!!
He loved the Pet store!

Me on the left and my sister on the right.  I have the same wonky braids going!
Me and my sister having tea with our dolls.

Kathy is back in Ohio.
We had alot of fun but it was just too short a visit!

Love shortens the distance
between friends.
Though, sometimes, we are far apart,
...in my heart you are always
near.

Sister Visit - Rosedown Plantation

Childs' Dress  at Rosedown Plantation.
Rosedown Plantation is in St. Francisville, Louisiana.

It is my all time favorite Plantation Home to visit!

Click on pictures for Close up.
This dress is fine batiste, embellished with tiny tucks and lace.

This beautiful Cradle is where their babies slept!

Isn't that a pretty chair?
I loved to see the old sewing machine and clothing along with sewing implements.
The baby clothes would have been sewn by hand though!

I want one of these!
The Butlers Pantry.

This is on my list of Dreams!
I love pretty dishes.  Just think - A Dish Room!!  And this is my ideal.  More cupboards that you can't see in this picture, too!
The outside of Rosedown Plantation is amazing!

And the Gardens are worth the trip all by themselves.

Me on the left and my sister on the right.

I looked  like Pippy Longstocking with my crooked braids!  Pretty homely!
Me on the left and my sister on the right.

We are having a great time!   Wish you were here!!

Are you enjoying my vacation with my sister?
Have you been to any of the old plantations?  Which one is your favorite?

All photographs were taken by my sister Kathy.  Except the last one.  Probably taken by  Daddy.

Sister Visit - Grandmother's Buttons

Grandmothers Buttons is a shop in St. Francisville, Louisiana
The owner started her Jewelry making business using her Grandmother's buttons.

The shop is full of unique  gifts of all sorts.

But gifts and jewelry made using buttons dominate!

The shop was a former old Bank building (notice the word BANK on the window above the door - but it is spelled backwards when viewed inside the shop).
This building is worth seeing all by itself!

There is a Button Museum inside the Bank Vault.  Beautiful and collectable buttons to see! And information about them.

The second floor of the building is where the jewelry is created.  What a wonderful place to work!

We all love Buttons!

Mother of Pearl Buttons are my favorite!

Me and my sister having my Birthday cake.
(today I get to be the cute one in the picture!)

We had a Great time!!
